Week long online FDP on "Open Source GIS software- QGIS"
jointly conducted by Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) in association with Shivaji College and Swami Shraddhanand College from 8th June to 14th June 2020.
A week long FDP from 8th June to 15th June 2020 on "Open Source GIS Sftware -
QGIS" is being organised by Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be
University) in association with Shivaji College was inaugurated on 8th June 2020 with a
jam-packed webinar. Based on a huge demand by faculty members of colleges and
universities, research scholars, PGT’s of schools, the present FDP, second in series,
aimed to train the participants with hands on training and display of its application by
experts about newly introduced Geo-Spatial Technologies on an open source GIS
software. The FDP ran its technical sessions and supporting sessions for the entire week
under the watchful eye of Dr. Daljit Singh (Associate professor, Department of
Geography, Swami Shraddhanand College) Joint Convener and master trainer of the
FDP. This immensely well attended FDP saw insights into the training and practical
usage for Open Source GIS software- QGIS, with learned resource persons not just
limited to the Department of Geography but also from Departments like Geology and
English sharing their knowledge. Dr. Daljit Singh presented the following sessions during
the course of the FDP: “1. Open File - Raster and Vector, 2. Coordinating System and
components 3. Geo-referencing of the given Toposheet (1:50,000 scale).”; “Image to
map registration in QGIS”; “Extraction of Polygon Features from the given
georeferenced satellite images/Maps in QGIS, Building Topology” ; “Extraction of Point and
Line Features from the given geo-referenced satellite image/Map, Buffering in QGIS”;
“Data Attachment (Building of Geo database) and Preparation of Thematic Map in QGIS
(Choropleth, Dot Map, Proportional Circles)” and “Print Composer in QGIS”. Dr
Ushvinder Kaur, Associate Professor in Geography, SSNC shared her valuable time
and presented the session titled “Elements of Map”; “Learning Geo-tagging, QGIS and
it's Applications” was headed by Dr Rajesh Kumar Abhay, Assistant Professor of
Geography, Dyal Singh College, University of Delhi, New Delhi. “Query building
(Attribute based query and Spatial query) in QGIS” and “Digital Image Processing in
QGIS- Un-Supervised Classification” both these sessions were presented by Dr. Sitender
Malik, CRSU, Jind. “Application of Geo-Spatial Technologies in Crime Management”
was an interesting take of this technology for more practical usage and was headed by Mr
Swaran Singh Jaggi, “An Introduction to NAAC” was headed by Dr. Tejbir Singh Rana,
while " Geographical mapping of Coronavirus hotspots (COVID-19)in and around Jaipur
city using Space Borne Technology for the management of Global fight against outbreaks
and pandemic" was headed by Dr. Suraj Kumar Singh (Associate Professor, Center for
Sustainable Development, Suresh Gyan Vihar University, Jaipur) all the sessions were
well appreciated for their practicality and pronounced a must by the participants in these
dubious times of this Pandemic; another session "(Re) Thinking Skills: How to Write and
Read a Research Paper " was a joint venture by Ms. Chetana Hooda and Ms Vaishali
Sharma (Assistant Professors, Department of English, Swami Shraddhanand College,
University of Delhi ). This session focused on knowledge accumulation and more
specifically to transform the accumulated knowledge into a Research Paper and honing
the skills to present the same with optimum efficiency. The participants, over 90 Faculty
members and 34 Research Scholars from across the country religiously participated and
appreciated the interactive and inclusionary nature of the entire FDP. They also actively
participated in the session exclusively dedicated to feedback for the FDP and reiterated to
the chair (Ms. Chetana Hooda, Assistant Professor, Department of English, SSNC) that
the FDP was a successful initiative and congratulated the entire organizing team for this
endeavour, closely followed by a valedictory session with Prof. B W Pandey gracing the
occasion as the chief guest and patiently overseeing the Convener’s report by Dr. Yuvraj
Singh, Feedback Summary by Dr. Mukesh Rana and vote of thanks by Ms. Chetana
Hooda.
