The HBCU-MSI Collaborative builds strategic partnerships with historically Black colleges and universities and other minority-serving institutions to increase equity and access in higher education throughout the 16-state region. Working with state agencies, education leaders and philanthropic organizations, this SREB group pursues ways to increase capacity and competitiveness among these institutions.

The HBCU-MSI Collaborative is a convening of executive-level leadership at HBCUs and institutions that predominantly serve American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and/or Nonresidents. These institutions are commonly known as MSI. This session is open by invitation to all HBCU and non-PWI chancellors, presidents, CEO, or their designee. In May 2022, the Southern Regional Education Board announced its HBCU-MSI Course-Sharing Consortium, a collaboration designed to help HBCUs and MSIs enable students to stay on the path to on-time graduation. The partnership was born out of the SREB HBCU-MSI Collaborative, which fosters strategic partnerships to increase capacity and improve student success among like-minded institutions.
The consortium brings together public and private institutions to expand students’ access to courses, at the times they need them, and within the culture that is a hallmark of the experience at HBCUs and MSIs.
