🌲 December in 5th Grade 🎁
ELA- We will continue to work through Unit 3 of the Wonders reading series. Our weekly stories will be expository text and realistic fiction. We will continue to have one more story test before break and students can use their textbook for reference during the test. In writing we will focus on narrative writing which will contribute to a special holiday gift! Our grammar topics will focus on verbs and verb tenses. We will alternate between one week of spelling words and one week of vocabulary words using the Vocabulary Workshop book.
Math- This month the at level math class will focus on concepts related to addition and subtraction of decimals. Right before break we will begin working on multiplying decimals. Please continue to practice basic multiplication facts. Each day we use a site called Xtra Math for 10 minutes of focused fact practice. Students may access this at home to practice more. The quicker they are with their basic facts, the easier the larger problems will be. *Honors math class- please refer to communication/Google classroom from Mrs. Burns.
Religion- We will work through Chapter 10 about the reception of Eucharist at mass, then two smaller chapters about Advent and Christmas.
Science- We will be exploring heat and heat transfer this month! We will also be making a snowstorm in a jar in the science lab this month. As a group project we will be making posters to illustrate what we are learning about conduction, convection, radiation, and conductors/insulators.
Social Studies- Students will work through Chapter 3 and continue learning states and capitals each week. They will also share about their culture and holiday traditions in a project each student will create.
