Prerequisite for All Art Classes: Your Imagination!
Course Description:
Each class is filled with projects and activities that will boost your critical thinking habits, improve your collaborative participation, grow your creativity & develop your communication skills through writing and talking about art.
Art 6 is a part of the Elective Wheel and is a 10 week course designed to introduce students to the basics of art including the elements of art/principles of design, including drawing, painting, and mixed-media art.
Art 7 & Art 8 is a semester-long, 20 week course and is designed as an introduction to all forms of visual communication: including drawing, painting, crafts, ceramics, printmaking, and 3D sculpture. Students may take both Art 7 and Art 8, and will cover different material.
Both classes will focus our exploration of the art world through the Studio Habits of Mind and Social/Emotional Learning.
It is my goal that all students will leave art with a strong capability to solve problems creatively, which is a highly sought after skill in today’s world. All projects are designed to meet the VAPA Standards for California Public Schools, as well as aligned to meet Common Core Standards. See below for state standard guidelines:
Artistic Perception: (artistic vocabulary, elements of art, principles of design, etc.)
Creative Expression: (the “doing” of the work)
Historical/Cultural Context: (background, art history)
Aesthetic Valuing: (evaluating art, reflections)
Connections: (interdisciplinary and cross-curricular connections)
How Students will be Graded
Rubrics describe levels of competency, and will be explained further in class.
A scale is used on the rubric to translate the competency level into percentage grades ranging 50%-100%. For every project there will be rubrics and requirements laid out for students. If the goals are met and you work hard, you will be successful!
Homework should only be necessary when you are absent or need extra time to finish a project. The majority of work is expected to be completed in class, as ample time is given.
Cell Phone/Chromebook/Digital Device Policy
Cell phones/Chromebooks are not to be visible or out in the art room unless ok’d by Mrs. Tanaka.
The device will be confiscated and given to the office staff if it is being used without permission. If students are having significant trouble following the expectations, I will be sure to let you know so that we can work on a solution together.
Absences and Tardy Policy
Please be on time. Refer to the Binder Reminder to explain in detail the school policy.
Excessive tardies result in a lower citizenship grade.
Restroom, Office, and Hall Passes
Leaving class will not be allowed during bellwork, instruction or clean up time. Please use your work time for these needs if possible. I am gracious with this until it becomes abused, so please use this privilege maturely.
