During the first term in math, the students will be working on Numeration which is the naming of numbers and mental math. It includes a review of place value and rounding, as well as learning decimals up to the ten thousandths. We will then move on to Multiplication and Division of Decimals and finish up the first term with Number Relationships. This includes multiples, factors and work with prime and composite numbers. The next term will start with Fractions and continue with Ratio and Percent, Patterns in Math and end with Measurement. The last term will start with finishing up Measurement then move on to 2-D Geometry and Motion Geometry. We will finish the year in math with Probability and Data Relationships.
We learned some tricks when it comes to multiplying by 10, 100, 1000 etc.
We found out that you simply add the number of zeros in the 10, 100 or 1000 after the number you're multiplying:
4 x 10 = 40
4 x 100 = 400
4 x 1000 = 4000
4 x 10 000= 40 000
We then talked about how the zero is really a place value holder. Therefore, when you multiply a decimal by 10, 100, 1000, you simply move the decimal to the right the number of places as there are zeros:
4.23 x 10 = 42.3
4.23 x 100 = 423
4.23 x 1000 = 4230
When it comes to division, you simply move the decimal in the opposite direction; you "Beyonce" the decimal and move it "to the left to the left"
42.3 /10 = 4.23
42.3/100 = 0.423
42.3/1000 = 0.0423
