Reading
This area of the curriculum focuses on reading, writing, spelling and speaking. For reading, the students will have Reading Centers, home reading and Guided Reading.
Throughout the year we will be actively reviewing different strategies that help enrich the reading experience and help make the students more capable readers. These include: Making Connections, Predicting, Inferring, and Evaluating.
We will also have theme units surrounding books that I will be reading aloud to the students. I will be reading aloud to the students daily.
Writing
Of course a crucial part of language arts is the writing assignments we will do. There will be specific narrative, expository and persuasive writing assignments as well as work with poetry. This is on top of the written work they will be completing in the other subject areas as well.
We will also be working through a Communicating Skills workbook to help us practice grammar and sentence structure, among other things.
Home Reading
Home reading is essential to continue developing reading fluency, comprehension and a love of reading. The daily reading should be a pleasant experience for you and your child. If your child has difficulty with five or more words on one page then the book is probably too difficult for them at this time. The key to home reading is regular, positive exposures to a variety of books with encouragement and support for their reading efforts. Also it is very beneficial to take turns reading with your child as a child’s listening level is higher than his/her reading level. They will benefit from new vocabulary and ideas as well as your reading expression.
