What is the FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is a form completed by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.

Documents Needed To Apply:

The FAFSA questions ask for information about you (your name, date of birth, address, etc.) and about your financial situation. Depending on your circumstances (for instance, whether you’re a U.S. citizen or what tax form you used), you might need the following information or documents as you fill out the FAFSA application:

  • Your Social Security number

  • Your parents’ Social Security numbers if you are a dependent student

  • Your driver’s license number if you have one

  • Your Alien Registration number if you are not a U.S. citizen

  • Federal tax information or tax returns including IRS W-2 information, for you (and your spouse, if you are married), and for your parents if you are a dependent student:

    • IRS 1040

    • Foreign tax return or IRS 1040NR

    • Tax return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, or Palau

  • Records of your untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans noneducation benefits, for you, and for your parents if you are a dependent student

  • Information on cash; savings and checking account balances; investments, including stocks and bonds and real estate (but not including the home in which you live); and business and farm assets for you, and for your parents if you are a dependent student


FAFSA Filing Options:

  • Log in at fafsa.gov to apply online or

  • Fill out the form in the myStudentAid mobile app, available on the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) or

  • Complete a 2022–23 FAFSA PDF (note: you must print out and mail the FAFSA PDF for processing) or

  • Request a print-out of the FAFSA PDF by calling us at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243); then fill out the form and mail it for processing


Steps to Apply:

  1. Go to the Government Student Aid website and choose the option, "Start Here".

  2. Create a FSA I.D.

    1. Write this information down. As a student, you will need this information to complete the FAFSA every year you are in college.

  3. Gather the documents needed to apply.

  4. Go to FAFSA.gov and select, "Login".

  5. Select the upcoming school year

  6. Complete the application

    1. Use the "Help and Hints" sidebar if you need more information about a specific question.

  7. Upon completion, print off your "Student Aid Report (SAR) for your records. This report will show what aid you qualify for.

  8. Contact your school counselor with any questions.
