This year, our focus is on culturally diverse art. We'll look at the work of BIPOC artists (Black, Indegenous, and people of color) in the United States, as well as cultures from other parts of the world.

Below are my top 4 items to set your child up for success in Art class next year. They add up to less than $10 total and are available at the grocery store!

Get Ready: Make sure your Indian Paisley artwork is uploaded to the Gallery (see tab above) so we can admire and discuss it as a class.
Materials:
- Heavier white or light-colored paper (substitute white copy paper)
- White crayon or oil pastel
- Watercolors (substitute markers)
- Cup full of water
- Salt shaker
- Small paintbrush (substitute Q-tips)

Materials:
- Heavier white or light-colored paper (substitute a file folder or brown paper bag)
- Permanent black marker (such as Sharpie)
- Water-based markers (such as Crayola)
- Cup full of water
- Small paintbrush (substitute Q-tips)

DISCUSSION SESSION: NOV 11, 12, 18, 19
(No School for Veteran's Day, make up on the 12th at 1pm)
Get Ready: Make sure your Dia De Los Muertos marigold artwork is uploaded to the Gallery (see tab above) so we can discuss it as a class.
Materials: Bring a piece of scratch paper, and a piece of construction paper ( if you don't have construciton paper, substitute a recycled brown paper bag, manila envelope, or file folder) and crayons.
Zoom Meeting Goals: Discuss student work in gallery. Build background about Indian Art. Create the first layer of new project.
Post-Zoom Homework: Listen to the read-aloud of the book Mama's Saris. As you listen to the story, look for paisley designs on the saris for inspiration.
Choose 2 colors and paint your paisley! Opaque paints like tempera, acrylic, or gouache are best. Watercolor will work, and sets are available at Springwater on loan. They're on the front porch.
WORK-ALONG SESSION: DEC 2, 3, 9,10

Materials: Bring a thicker piece of paper (this can be a recycled cereal box, manila envelope, or file folder) and crayons.
Zoom Meeting Goals: Discuss student work in gallery. Build background about the architecture of India. Create the first layer of our new project.
Post-Zoom Homework: Choose one: Listen to this short video What is a Stupa? What is a stupa used for? OR listen to the read aoud of the book Kamala Harris, Rooted In Justice. How do you think Kamala's Indian roots influenced who she grew up to be?

Get Ready: Make sure your artwork is uploaded to the Gallery (see tab above). Bring a piece of paper, and 3 markers in yellow, orange, and red.
Zoom Goals: Discuss student work in gallery. Build background about Dia De Los Muertos using Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS). Introduce radial design.
Homework: Watch Dia De Los Muertos read aloud. As you listen, count how many pages have marigolds or marigold petals. How many did you find?

Get Ready: Bring several pieces of thick white paper, paints (or markers), scissors, glue, and a coffee filter (optional). Watercolor sets are available at Springwater School on loan. They're on the front porch.
Zoom Goals: Project demonstration and work-along session.

About Jen
I am a graduate of Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. I studied a LOT of Art History in college, but can only name a handful of BIPOC artists and artists from non-western cultures. I'm eager to learn alongside my students this year!

Make Up Classes
If your child misses their assigned class for ANY reason, they are welcome to make-up the session. Simply go to the "Schedule" tab to find another K-2 lesson or 3-5 lesson to drop in on (grade cohorts do different projects). The Zoom link for all classes is the same. Unfortunately, because of bandwidth issues, I'm not able to reliably post recorded sessions.

Art Supplies
Part of keeping students engaged in Art is trying new media and techniques; Even the most motivated young artist can burn out on markers, crayons, and white copy paper! I have begun introducing projects that call for paints and construction paper, easily found at at most grocery stores. For those of you who don't have access to store-bought supplies, I've put some out on the porch at Springwater. There you'll find: watercolor sets and brushes (on loan), a variety of paper and not-great-but-better-than-nothing sets of acrylics (to keep). Please don't hesitate to take what you need!
Supply Substitutions
Kids are free to use whatever supplies they can get their hands on. Brown paper bags work great when "thicker paper" is called for. Creative reuse is encouraged!
