2Revolutions: Criticality of Rethinking Assessment

This is part of a set of articles that 2Revolutions developed for Mastery Assessment Week to feature some of the best and most applicable tools and courses from their InspirED platform, a social learning platform featuring a curated set of high-quality, free/open content resources to support educators in honing their educational practice.

We are excited about Mastery Week and applaud the focus on assessment. So often, assessment is separated from the instructional cycle. This week, we will begin looking at assessment in a much more integrative way--unpacking a continuum from formative to performance assessment to learner-driven assessment; looking at how assessment figures so prominently in the learning process; and looking at the various roles that both learner and teacher have in a robust mastery-based process.

As we support districts and schools around the country in making this transition, one of the most important elements of the work is building educator knowledge and skills. 2Rev is excited to introduce a new effort over the coming weeks to support mastery-based learning. LEARN NEXT powered by InspirED is a free hub (sign up here), co-developed with a range of national partners, with powerful learning experiences for educators. If we want students to be prepared to drive their own learning, we must also provide educators with professional development that models the shift we’re aiming at for students--more personalized and competency-based experiences that build capacity and empower greater educator agency.

Each building block has an educator learning progression and leveled learning resources in the form of playlists and courses.

Topic areas include:

  • Competency-Based Learning (Mastery-Based Learning, Proficiency-Based Learning)
  • Learner Agency (Student Agency)
  • Personalized Learning
  • Deeper Learning
  • Tech-Enabled Learning (Blended Learning, Tool Selection)
  • Assessment for Learning (Formative Assessment, Performance Assessment, Authentic Assessment)
  • Broader Definition of Success (Essential Skills and Dispositions, 21st-Century Skills)
