Librarians teach a variety of lessons.
Elementary librarians spend time teaching young ones how to care for books, how to find books, how to read the call number/spine labels, how libraries work (circulation, information seeking, reference materials, and online materials). They also teach a love of reading through storytimes, author studies, genre studies, and programs like book fairs. Little ones can be taught research through the Big3 and older students can learn research through the Big6.
The State of Texas helps pay the bulk of the cost for all Texas students and their families to have access to some databases. Currently, we receive a much reduced rate for Britannica Online and Gale Group/Cengage databases, both of which cover general information, and for the Matthews photo databases about the American West and American Indians. Gale databases have journals, magazines, news, books, National Georgaphic for Kids and more. Britannica Encyclopedia is no longer published in print. Searching Britannica Online in a search engine does not take students to the site that is paid for.
Each campus has a login and password for the databases and a link to the site for its campus. If students use Destiny Discover and are logged in with their Spring ISD username and password, they won't need to remember any other logins. The databases are integrated into Destiny Discover. (See Destiny Discover in the Home Tab above under Quick Links for more help.)
