Grade 11 Tour to the Western Cape Schools Festival
The staggeringly popular Grade 11 outing to the Western Cape Schools Festival will take place next week on Wednesday and Thursday. This academic outing focuses on the arts and the humanities and is keenly focused on issues of self-expression and the development of language skills, consisting of several ticketed workshops and performances at the Artscape. The festival will connect our pupils with almost 1000 pupils from across the province. Springfield has been attending this festival for almost two decades and we know that the pupils get the best out of it by throwing themselves into the full programme of events.
Details of the two days have been shared with the Grade 11 parents and guardians. Mr Fick and Mrs Tromp will be at the Artscape from 07:30 on both days to meet the pupils who need to be dropped off early for the start of the first day. The pupils should wear their full school uniform upon arrival on the first day and bring with them a change of comfortable clothing that will allow them to move around in the workshops they are allocated, some of which include physical movement and dancing. Light meals and teas will be provided, but the pupils are welcome to bring an additional snack to see them through the day. The pupils may not leave the Artscape premises during the day to purchase food from the surrounding shops and restaurants.
Grade 10 and 11 Life Orientation Island Days
The Grade 10 and 11 pupils will have their first Life Orientation Island Days this week. The Grade 10 day will be facilitated by Lead4Life and will focus on personal identity and branding, while the Grade 11 day will learn skills related to critical and creative thinking, an essential skill in this day and age. One exciting inclusion in the Grade 11 day will be the Anzisha Prize Tour, an entrepreneurial workshop that also features input from Allan Grey. Pupils in both grades should wear their physical education uniforms for the Island Days.
Grade 9 Creative Arts Rotations
The Grade 9s had their first set of Creative Arts rotations this week. In Art, the pupils explored their artistic sides through a number of disciplines including ceramics where they made masks, printmaking where they produced relief prints and screen prints on fabric. In Drama, the topics of theme, plot, character and setting were taught. The pupils devised scenes based on each of these topics, playing everything from dancing “tik-tok” grannies and aliens through lost spelunkers and aggrieved holidaymakers. In Music, the pupils started by learning rhythms and basic notes values. They went on to create their own rhythm patterns which they performed in groups. The pupils also watched the film, What Happened, Miss Simone? which portrays the life of prolific singer and pianist, Nina Simone. We all know how important the arts are to the development of young people and the Grade 9s had a great time embracing their second art forms over these two days.
Grade 8 English Choral Verse Performances
