NSC Matric Examinations Ceremony at Leeuwenhof

Premier Alan Winde celebrated achievements at schools across the Western Cape in a ceremony at Leeuwenhof last week, where Springfield received an award for Academic Excellence. At this ceremony, Springfield placed fifth in the Western Cape in the 2019 NSC Matric Examinations with our top pupil, Jess Holing, earning a spot in the Top 20 candidates in Western Cape. Jade Acton was also awarded for being one of only eight candidates with 100% for Visual Arts. Congratulations once again to all our 2019 Matrics as well as the staff and parents who supported them through a wonderful year.

Week one

The grade 8's had a busy start to the school year with their grade 8 orientation week. In this week they received input about various aspects of the school including our ethos, code of conduct as well as input from student body on life as part of the Springfield community. More than receiving information about the school the girls got to know each other as well as the grade 12's by participating in group activities, namely the buddy picnic which was organised by the Care portfolio. They worked very hard to put together a fun programme for the afternoon of the first day of school. Opportunities to connect with other new pupils were created through a buddy picnic, time in the pool (on a very hot day) and various minute-to-win-it games. New girls and teachers also each received a useful Orientation booklet which includes information on many aspects of school life from a map to input on “Transformation” in the school. Thank you to Jen Mitchell and Hayley Marais for the very thorough booklet and to Caitlin Mastoss and Haylen Accom for the hard work behind the Programme. The week culminated in the grade 8's being welcome by the whole school at the end of the school day where they received roses and a school badge.

LO Island Days

Planning for the year ahead is always important. For the grade 12s planning for 2021, as they exit the safety of Springfield, is a daunting task. The Grade 12s had the opportunity to begin this overwhelming task in their Life Orientation Island Day yesterday.

Annie Oehley, a past parent and skilled Industrial Psychologist and Career Guidance counsellor set the foundation of knowledge and skills needed to embrace life outside Springfield. This was followed by a panel of four past students. The insight, honesty and warm hearted engagement between the panelist and the Grade 12s was a significant moment in the day. Many Grade 12s commented on how helpful it was to hear from these wonderful role models. The rest of the day was spent engaging with the Grade 12 curriculum material. The Island Day is a new approach to Life Orientation at Springfield. It offers an opportunity for the students to engage with a range of issues in a more focused and dedicated manner.

For the Grade 12s now the hard work begins.

Grade 10 Information Evening

Mrs Meder, the new Grade Administrator, will be hosting an information evening for Grade 10 parents on Monday, 27 November at 18:30. The main feature of the evening will be a parents’ orientation session by Elevate Education, who runs the study skills sessions that the Grade 10s will experience this year. This will be an indispensable resource when it comes to supporting your child’s learning experience at home, with time also being set aside for you to ask any questions you might have about Grade 10 at Springfield in 2020. Elevate Education also offers individual coaching to school pupils, which kicks off with a free diagnostic session.

Further information is available at this link. Please contact Elevate Education directly at info.za@elevateeducation.com should you be interested in this resource, which stretches across all subjects to address the underlying skills of time management, motivation, maintaining a growth mindset, stress management and exam techniques.
