Spencer Elementary School is an EL Education learning school which uses the Expeditionary Learning model to develop students as life long learners. We focus on the three core principles of Character, Mastery of student knowledge and skills, and High-quality student work. We begin each morning with Crew. During this time classes have lessons that are driven by the idea that we are all Crew, not passengers, and focus on our six Habits of Character: Perseverance, Craftsmanship, Compassion, Collaboration, Initiative, and Integrity.
EL Education is a recommended ELA curriculum from the Wisconsin Department of Instruction and is aligned with the science of reading. The curriculum, along with our highly trained teachers, are able to provide foundational reading instruction to allow all students to learn to read. The curriculum has 8-12 week Modules that provide a deep understanding of content which allows students to develop high level critical thinking skills and are interdisciplinary, intertwining our Science and Social Studies standards into these modules. These critical thinking skills allow students to create service projects for the community, to include our on site 12 acre school forest, as well as our 55 acre school forest that sits 5 miles outside of town. Some of the projects students are working on are bird observation areas, pollination gardens, and habitat improvement for the many species of animals and plants that live in these areas.
Spencer Elementary School utilizes the Bridges math curriculum to ensure students have active learning experiences grappling with math concepts in collaborative ways and allows for multiple strategies to solve problems. Bridges teaches core math concepts and incorporates games and activities for students to apply their newly learned skills. There is also a Number Corner time which focuses on developing reasoning skills and pattern recognition with daily routines. Our teachers ensure students have opportunities to work in groups as well as individually to gather evidence, explain results, and build problem solving skills in an inclusive learning environment.
