Transcribers should be using the Standard Web Captions Transcription Guide.
The following are additional instructions for SDH captions reviewers.
All rules from the Standard Reviewer Style Guide apply.
Positioning
All SDH files will use positioning. When important information is on screen: Speaker name info, commands, information pop-ups, etc. Position the captions at the top of the screen.
To position, go to: Window > Format Subtitles.
This box will pop up.
The left column is subtitle position on the screen. By default they are at the bottom. Move to the top position to avoid on-screen text.
The right column is justification. You do not need to change this.
Correct Example
The speaker’s information would have been covered up by the captions, so they have been moved to the top.
Timing
Timing for SDH files must be perfect. In standard captions, we do not create new subtitle groups for 1-2 second pauses.
In SDH, you must create a new subtitle group.
Do not leave captions on screen at the end of the file after speaking has finished.
Ambient Noises/Sound effects (NEW!! as of 06/23/2017)
All important ambient noises must be included in SDH captions. If the noises take place during speech, they do not have to be in their own subtitle group:
Ex: - I know what you mean. [laughs] I thought it was crazy, too.
If the ambient noises are happening by themselves, put them in a new subtitle group.
Burn-in
Most SDH Captions will be burned into the video once complete. Minor changes cannot be made without sending the whole file back to be reburned. Therefore, it is very important that files are as perfect as possible.
