Donations to Special Olympics are used to offset Weekly Programming Costs for Athletes and support Athlete Hardship cases so everyone has an opportunity to participate.
Legacy Donations - When Donations are made in lieu of Flowers - The donations are put in a savings account, the interest of that account is spent on Athlete Hardship and Special Cases to directly impact Athletes who otherwise can't afford equipment or registration fees.
Competitive Athletes have the opportunity to attend Special Olympic Games Provincially, Nationally and at the Special Olympics World Games.
If an athlete is selected to attend Canada Winter Games, it Costs the Athlete approximately $4300, at the community level, Special Olympics SK Saskatoon is in a position to cover $1000, while Special Olympics Saskatchewan covers another $1000 - the final cost trickles down to the athlete for about $2300 in Fees, Training, Lead-up Events, Sports Equipment, and Proper Games Clothing & Footwear.
The Legacy Fund is an investment account set up by the Community Executive Council - all donation received in lieu of flowers are set aside in an investment account. The goal of the account is to develop enough interest to offset the cost of programming. Until the investment reaches that point, interest of the account can be utilized for The Special Olympics Sk Saskatoon Financial Assistance Program. This program is in place to break barriers for athletes that would otherwise not be able to participate due to the cost of programming or required equipment. Each Financial Assistance case is reviewed by the Community Executive Council.
