Reading:
Reading is an important life skill. To be a great reader we need to have practice. In second grade, I would like my students to be practicing their reading not just inside the classroom but outside as well. I know times get busy for many families, but please take the time to set aside a special time for your child to read each day. A good way to get into the habit of reading is to get your 2nd grader reading 20 min. each night, five times a week. That is 100 minutes a week! The kids can break up the minutes 5 min one night and 35 minutes the next. However, you can fit your required reading time in, is fine. I do not mind, just as long as the kids are reading. The minutes can be split up for Saturday and Sunday as well. Reading is an important life skill so please get your child into the habit of reading each night. You child will have the option to bring home a FISH bag that will have a new book at their level or of their choice. Your child can read the FISH books and/or books from the school or public library, and/or books from your home library. Please log your reading minutes on your monthly calendar (located at the back of the daily green communication folder) and return it at the end of each month. We will start reading right away in September!
Word Study:
During class time each week we will be working on different word skills. We practice these words through phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Students will play games, complete worksheets, and get many opportunities to practice these skills during class. Later in the year we will start having spelling tests. When this occurs, the words will come home with a quiz date on them, but the students will still have opportunities to practice in class.
Math:
Every so often a math packet will come home. The homework is a review of what we have been working on in math and it is sent home at the end of each topic. Please help your child with any questions they may have, but please let them do the work.
