Legionella is a bacteria found in natural water sources that can live and grow in poorly maintained domestic water systems.
The disease can affect a number of people but more commonly the over 50's, smokers, diabetics, people with chronic lung/heart or kidney disease and those who are already immunocompromised, such as cancer sufferers.
If not monitored correctly it can cause respiratory problems like Legionella pneumophila or Legionella longbeachae, a severe form of pneumonia
Legionella can be combated by keeping water systems clean and well monitored, ensuring the water is at the correct temperature to kill the bacteria, and that regular cleaning of showers, storage tanks and other assets is carried out on a regular basis.
The bacteria is taken in to the lungs via aerosols, such as showers, misting devices and water agitation in hot tubs. The disease can not be transfered from person to person.
