Mrs. Olinik’s Homework Policy
Homework will be given most nights (except Fridays) in second grade. I try to give only a small amount of work each night, allowing for students to get a little extra practice at skills learned in school, without causing undue stress.
Most homework papers will be taken from our Reader’s Notebook (Language Arts) or math book. These books have perforated pages that the children can tear out and bring home. Since these pages come from workbooks, they are usually double- sided. Students ONLY need to complete the side of the worksheet marked with “H.W.” (for Language Arts) or the circled problems (for math). If your child wants to complete the other side for fun, they are welcome to, but I will only be checking the assigned side/problems.
Second graders should read for 15 minutes each night. They can read aloud to a parent, sibling, or pet, or read to themselves.
You may also practice your child’s spelling words, though how much you practice is up to you, depending on how well your child knows the words. These words can be found on the back cover of the homework folder.
Homework worksheets should be returned to school the next day. I have reviewed with the children that they are to place their homework in the blue “Turn-in Bin” when they come into the classroom in the morning. Please emphasize to your child that they need to be responsible for checking their folder and handing in their homework each day.
Homework assignments for each day will be written in your child’s agenda book. The agenda might also contain reminders for the next day, such as to wear sneakers for gym or return library books.
Students who do not complete their homework will have to complete it at recess.
Thank you for all of your help at home, and thank you for taking the time to be involved in your child’s education! Together we can help your child become a successful student!
