Classes will be separated by:
9th and 10th grades will be together in the traditional P.E. class, focusing on all aspects of team and individual sports, fitness and conditioning.
11th and 12th grades will have 2 options where possible
#1 - Competitive Sports - This course will focus on the concept of team and individual sports at a more highly competitive level. The course grading system will include a component on skill and skill development, as well as a high degree of class participation and sportsmanship.
#2 - Personal Fitness - This course will focus on personal fitness for the individual students. They will be actively involved in all levels of creating a fitness plan that matches their needs, including but not limited to, exercise and fitness goals, nutritional goals and motivational goals. The 5 components of fitness are the main focus and we will utilize the weight room, cardiovascular room and the auxiliary gym for conditioning/fitness programs. The 5 components of fitness are:
1. Cardiovascular Fitness
Cardiovascular fitness (also known as cardio-respiratory fitness) is the ability of the heart, lungs and vascular system to deliver oxygen-rich blood to working muscles during sustained physical activity. Aerobic exercise improves cardiovascular fitness.
2. Muscular Strength
Muscular strength is the amount of force a muscle or muscle group can exert against a heavy resistance. Anaerobic exercise improves muscular strength.
3. Muscular Endurance
Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle or muscle group to repeat a movement many times or to hold a particular position for an extended period of time. Both aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise can improve muscular endurance.
4. Flexibility
Flexibility is the degree to which an individual muscle will lengthen. Stretching improves flexibility.
5. Body Composition
Body Composition is the relative proportions of protein (muscle), fat, water, and mineral components in the body. It varies among individuals as a result of differences in body density and degree of percentages of those components.
A better understanding of the 5 components of physical fitness will allow each student to develop an effective individual fitness program for their needs.
