The Pennsylvania State Driver Education Curriculum dictates that all students must attend a minimum of 30 clock hours of classroom instruction in order to get credit for the course. Students not meeting this requirement will not receive credit.

The class meets every other day for one semester. Students and parents are encouraged to register with guidance for enrollment that coincides with the time that the student reaches permit age (16 years).

Driver Education Theory:

Driver Education Theory will provide the students with at least 30 hours of classroom instruction, which will prepare a student for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Law and Theory written exam. Topics that will be explored are: Decision Making, Right of Way and Yielding Laws, Signs, Signals and Pavement Markings, Perceptual Eye Training, the Highway Transportation System, Pennsylvania’s Point System, DUI Laws, and difference in driving environments.

Student Requirements:

Required to have in class on a daily basis:

1) Computer (charged)

2) Binder and/or folder with notebook

3) A writing utensil

Expectations:

1) Get to class on time – this means you are in the classroom, have a charged computer, have sharpened your pencil, have notebook paper, and any required assigned work before the bell rings. If you are going to be late because you are in the office, asking a teacher for help, or any other legitimate reason, please have your handbook or pass signed by the secretary, principal, assistant principal, dean of students, teacher, support staff, or school employee.

2) You must complete homework – this means you must have your homework with you at the start of class. If you failed to complete the whole assignment, turn in what you have, some points are better then no points.

** When a student is absent from school it is the student’s responsibility to communicate with their teachers via email or check assignments posted on Google classroom. The main office no longer collects or gathers student’s assignments for absences.

** Although students are encouraged to keep up with assignments while absent, the student has two school days upon returning to make up any work missed. It is the student’s responsibility to take the initiative in arranging for make up work.

Consequence:

Most students who fail to achieve a passing grade do not complete homework or classroom assignments. You will not receive homework every night, but you are responsible for completing any assignment given. Late homework will not be accepted unless it is from a legal excused absence. Remember, you control your own grade and will be given the grade that you earned.

3) You must cooperate and follow directions

• • Must participate in classroom activities, follow along in class, and not be disruptive.

  • No food or drinks

  • Cell phones are only allowed if the teacher gives permission.

  • You are expected to be respectful to your classmates, school property, and teachers.

4) Tests, Quizzes, or other Summative Assessments

If a student is absent on the day of a test and he or she has not been absent for work covered on the test, he or she is expected to be prepared to take the test upon returning.

Grading Procedure:

Grading will be done using weighted categories. There will be three categories labeled Summative, Projects, and Homework/Participation. Summative category will include tests and quizzes. Projects will include individual and group project-based learning assignments. Homework and participation will include all homework assignments as well as in-class discussions and course work. Every assignment, quiz, or test will be worth a certain point value. This will be predetermined and announced the day the assignment, quiz, or test is given. Driver Education is a semester long course that meets every other day. We will only be together a very short time period with a lot of information to cover, so it is very important that you do not miss class or any assignments.

Each category will be weighted as followed:

• Summative Category = 40%

• Projects Category = 30%

• Homework/Participation Category = 30%
