Accelerated Reading:
students are required to read for at least 20 minutes each evening
students should select books based upon their reading level
for the 1st marking period all students will have a goal of 15 AR points
for each marking period after, students will have the goal listed on the beginning of year handout
in order to earn all possible points for a test, students must have at least 70% of the AR test questions correct
AR tests can only be taken during school hours, you may still check progress on points at home
Students must check out books from the library to read in class. Reading electronic books may only be done at home.
AR End Dates:
MP 1: November 2nd
MP 2: January 20th
MP 3: March 29th
MP 4: June 3rd (tentative)
Writing:
students will focus on the descriptive, narrative, informational, & persuasive writing modes, and TDAs/TDQs (Text Dependent Analysis/Questions)
students will focus on the traits of ideas and content, organization, sentence fluency, voice, conventions, and word choice
students will write published pieces throughout the year .
Grammar:
comes from Pearson Reading Street and other sources
students will learn to identify and use correctly the basic parts of speech, paragraphing, comma rules and conventions
a "digital notebook" and a binder/folder will house all of the grammar/writing information for the entire year
GRADING:
Reading:
40% - Reading & Grammar tests/Writing pieces
25% - Independent Work
35% - Warm-up quizzes/ EdPuzzle, etc.
Social Studies:
60% - Common Assessments/Common Projects/Quizzes
40% Classwork
Reading:
Reading Street textbook (also available online in Realize account)
60% fiction
40% non-fiction
Reading to learn v. learning to read
Whole group/partner/individual
Use of reading strategies
Social Studies:
ELA reading and writing strategies are carried over
Focus: geography, Native Americans, Explorers, Early America, Colonial America, American Revolution, Westward Expansion, Civil War, Economics
Quizzes and tests: more application based rather than memorization
