The Sparta Board of Education asks residents to consider one ballot question on September 16.
The proposal includes a mix of facility repairs and improvements including:
HVAC, electrical, and other system upgrades, as well as roofing and window replacements, to improve efficiency and air quality.
Improvements to the Sparta High School science labs to equip students with modern learning environments and enhance the STEM academy programming.
A 46,625-square-foot addition at Alpine School, featuring 20 classrooms, a high school-sized gym, and classrooms dedicated to special programs. This addition would be roughly 80% of the size of a football field.
Construct a new 46,625-square-foot addition to provide enhanced learning spaces for student growth and eliminate the need for trailers as classrooms. This addition would feature:
10 classrooms for kindergarten
10 classrooms for second grade
High school-sized gymnasium with restrooms and separate entrance to support student programs and community use
Dedicated classrooms for art, music, Spanish and computer science instruction, matching the other elementary schools in the district
Address traffic flow to and from the school by creating a new and expanded bus lane and more faculty parking
Install new windows and doors to boost energy efficiency and replace the ones original to the building
Replace the roofing to avoid leaks and protect the community’s investment
Upgrade electrical service to accommodate the HVAC upgrades
Replace the school’s boiler and the aging HVAC equipment in classrooms with more efficient systems to improve climate control and reduce maintenance costs

Sparta Township Public Schools worked with professional consultants to thoroughly investigate the district’s need for space. They found that space is available within all the district's schools to absorb enrollment gains – except for Alpine School.
The district has already maximized every spare space at Alpine School, evidenced by:
Trailers used for classrooms over the past 20 years.
Special programming like art, music, Spanish and computer science is currently offered by traveling carts rather than in dedicated classrooms.
Small group instruction is currently held in the hallways.
Multi-purpose room stage is currently used as office space.
Multi-purpose room is currently used as a gym, cafeteria, performance and event space, and more – sometimes at the same time!
Our other elementary schools – Helen Morgan and Mohawk Avenue – both have dedicated spaces for special programs and a gymnasium separate from the cafeteria.
Bond funding finances big projects and reduces the amount that lands on local tax bills thanks to state aid. For Sparta Township Public Schools, that’s $16.9 million on the line. This comes from money collected across the state (including from Sparta residents) through taxes. Sparta has an opportunity to access those funds to invest in improvements for our schools with voter approval of a referendum.
