Season Recaps
2022 In Head Coach Sean Peterson’s inaugural season, the team finished with a 14-5 record. They were the 2022 RIZK division champs, finishing undefeated in the conference. The team clinched in thrilling fashion in a double OT victory over Morris Knolls. The teams state run ended with a loss to # 1 seeded Summit 9-2 in the semifinals. The team finished ranked top 35 in the state.
2021 The team returned to the field after a long year of the pandemic crisis. The team finished with an overall record of 9-7 and 5-2 in the Rizk Division with two heartbreaking losses by one goal to both Randolph (in double OT) and Chatham. The team’s state run finished with a loss to #1 state-ranked Summit in the quarterfinals.
2020 Season canceled due to COVID-19 Pandemic
2019 The team finished with a 14-6 record, and was the 2019 Rizk Division Champion, finishing with a 6-1 conference record.
2018 Team finished with a 10-9 record in the second year in the Fitch Pitt, and the team had a big win over top 10 ranked Chatham, 11-10.
2017 Moved up to the Fitch Pitch, the toughest division in the State. Our record was 9-10 with a big win over top 10 team Westfield. Made into semi-finals of both HWS and North 1 Group 2 state sections.
2016 The team had their best season in school history by going 20-1 on the season. Sparta was the 2016 Rizk Division
Champion with a record of 6-0. They were the H/W/S tournament champions, defeating North Hunterdon 11-7. The win
was Sparta's first tri-county title in program history and the first time a Sussex County program has ever won the tournament. In the NJSIAA North, Group 2 state tournament, Sparta beat Morris Hills and Jefferson before losing to Chatham 12-10 in the semifinals. At season's end, Sparta was ranked #15 in the state by NJ.com.
2015 The team finished with an overall record of 15-3. Sparta was also the 2015 Rizk Division Champion with an undefeated
record of 7-0 and was 4th in NJSIAA North, Group 2. Made it to the H/W/S semifinals, where they lost to North Hunterdon
11-8. Lost 11-8 to Chatham in the state quarterfinals in a hard fought, back and forth battle.
2014 Inaugural season of Head Coach Tyler Meth. The team finished with a 9-10 record overall; 2-2 in the Rizk Division.
Faced tough competition in NJSIAA North, Group 2 regular season games against two top ten teams and one in the top 15,
which included Northern Highlands and Summit. Also, part of the newly formed National Division of the NJAC Conference,
playing Morristown-Beard, Mount Olive, Montville, Vernon, Randolph and West Morris-Mendham. Made a semi-final
appearance in the H/W/S tournament and a second round appearance in the NJSIAA North, Group 2 tournament, losing a
hard fought game by one point (9-8) to third seed Chatham High School.
2013 Finished the season at 19-3. Ranked 21st in New Jersey according to www.laxpower.com. Herald Boys' Lacrosse
Team of the Year. Rizk Division Champions at 8-0. Ranked 3rd in the North, Group 2, 4-1. For the first time in team history,
made an appearance in H/W/S tournament final game versus Hunterdon Central High School. Played in NJSIAA North, Group 2 semi-final game against Chatham High School.
2012 Finished 2nd in Rizk Division with a record of 8-2. Herald Team of the Year.
2011 Finished season 11-6. Rizk Division Champions with a record of 7-1.
2010 For the first time in Sparta High School Lacrosse team history, the Spartans achieved a state semi-final appearance
against Mendham, but gave up a late fourth quarter goal, resulting in a 4-3 loss
2009 A challenging season for a young team in a rebuilding year. Finished the season at 4-10 with 4 OT and double OT
losses.
2008 Finished season 13-5. First round state playoff victory over Northern Highlands 4-3. Lost in Group 2 state
quarterfinals to state champion Moorestown 11-6. Finished the season ranked 7th in the state, Group 2.
2007 Second in Rizk Division after a close 4-3 loss to Montclair Kimberley. First round playoff victory over Wayne Hills
before losing to Ramapo 6-3.
2006 Second in Rizk Division. First round playoff victory over Hanover Park 8-7 before falling 7-6 in OT to eventual state
champion Ramapo. Finished the season ranked 7th in the state, Group 2. Nic Heckman is the first Sparta player ever to
receive All American Honors. Coach Brennan records his 100th victory early in the season.
2005 Rizk Division Champions with a record of 9-0. First round state playoff victory over Hopewell 11-7 before falling
15-4 to West Essex in the second round. Record for most wins in a single season in school history, finishing the year ranked
24th in the state.
2004 First year in the "B" Division. Finished in 2nd place in the Rizk Division and ranked 15th in the state by the Star
Ledger. Won first round state playoff game over Montville 7-2 before falling to Ramapo 12-7.
2003 Rizk Division Champions with a record of 10-0. Finished the year ranked 19th in the state. Won first home state
playoff game in school history over Washington Township 15-3 before falling in the second round to Columbia 10-3
2002 Finished in second place in the Rizk Division and ranked 26th in the state. First round state playoff victory over
Nutley High School 11-5. Lost in the second round to eventual state champion Delbarton 8-0.
2001 First state playoff win in school history over South Brunswick 9-3. Lost in the second round in the state playoffs
to A.L. Johnson 10-3.
2000 Rizk Division Champions with a record of 10-0. Lost in the first round of the state playoffs to A.L. Johnson 10-7.
Luke and Alan Wikander become the first Sparta Lacrosse players to play Division I lacrosse at Bucknell University.
1999 Kimber Division Champions with a record of 11-0. Lost in the first round of the state playoffs to Montclair
Kimberley Academy 10-6.
1998 Finished in second place in the league behind Morristown Beard. First state playoff game in school history is a
loss to Moorestown 18-8 in the first round.
1996 First year of Varsity Lacrosse and first win 6-5 over Bayley Ellard High School.
