SCIENCE SAFETY REGULATIONS
1. Students are not permitted to bring food, candy, gum, or beverages into a science room.
2. All students must wear approved safety goggles when involved in a laboratory activity in which hot liquids or solids are used.
3. It is required that all students who wear contact lenses remove them prior to all laboratory activities when chemicals are used and wear prescription eyeglasses and safety goggles.
4. All students are required to wear the proper shoes during laboratory activities. Sandals and other open shoes are not permitted during laboratory activities.
5. Students with long hair exceeding shoulder length must tie back their hair when involved in laboratory activities.
6. Never taste chemicals or drink from a beaker in the laboratory.
7. Be alert and maintain decorum during laboratory activities. Never rush. Always be prepared to stop quickly.
8. Never carry hot equipment or dangerous chemicals through a congested area of students.
9. Report all injuries to the teacher immediately regardless of how minor.
10. Know the location of the fire blanket. If clothing should catch fire, smother the fire with the blanket.
11. Never attempt unauthorized experiments. No laboratory work should occur without the teacher’s permission.
12. Be aware of what may appear to be drops of water on laboratory tables. They may be corrosive liquids.
13. The most common type of injury is a burn caused by touching objects that have just been heated. Determine whether an object is hot by bringing the back of your hand up close to the object.
14. When working with a partner, be attentive to what your partner is doing and be sure to warn your partner of potential hazards.
15. When removing an electric plug from a socket, pull the plug and not the cord. Report frayed cords to the teacher. Bare electrical wires can be dangerous.
16. Report sharp edges on mirrors, prisms, glass plates, metal plates, etc. to the teacher so they can be removed.
17. Check glassware for cracks or chips before using. Broken glassware should be reported to the teacher. Broken glassware should be placed in the containers provided. Be careful not to leave broken glass on tables or in the sink.
18. The storeroom is out of bounds to all students except when permission has been granted by the teacher.
19. Study the purpose of an experiment before performing the experiment. If the purpose and procedure is not understood, ask the teacher for clarification.
