8th Grade Physical Science Class Syllabus
Class overview:
During this school year, you will be learning about the different components of physical science. Physical science is the study of matter. This is a unique type of science due to having other branches embedded within: chemistry and physics. For the chemistry aspect of the course, we will focus on the structure and properties of matter & how it changes. For physics, we will focus on energy changes and the force energy has on matter.
Fundamental Units of Science:
Students are also going to be studying these additional ideologies of science: Laboratory Safety, Measurements, and Experimental Design.
It is very important for students to learn about appropritae behaviors and labortatory safety in a science setting. We will learn about different scientific equipment and how to handle such equipment with care so we can safetly experiment different phenomonena throughout the year.
Being about to convert one unit of measurement into another is a universal tool that is applicable in everyday life. Hence, students will learn how to measure length, mass and volume of various items using metric rulers, meter sticks, digital balances and graduated cylinders. In addition, be able to convert one unit into another using the metic system. Data collection during a science experiment is crucial to results, hence, students will be practicing all year how to measure various contents using the metric system.
Scientific inquiry, or exploring a concept based on a scientific questions or information, allows students to explore everyday questions that are testable. Throughout the year, we will apply experimental design to all of our laboratory explorations. This means we will create a scientific questions for formulate a purpose for the experiment we want to conduct, identify different variables within the experiment, as well as write a formal hypothesis, along with a comprehensive list of materials used and steps required to conduct their investigation. During the experiment, data will be collected and displayed in a proper data table. Students will analyze their data using computations and graphs. Conclusions about their hypothesis will be formed using data from the experiment as evidence.
