Course Description 

This course provides instruction in literal and interpretive comprehension of informational and non-fiction pieces, and literary elements of a novel/short story, and also includes vocabulary development and grammar. Students will work on becoming more effective writers as they improve upon narrative, persuasive, and expository written pieces as well as informative writing pieces with supporting evidence. Students are exposed to a  variety of texts (fiction and non-fiction), short stories, non-fiction articles, biographical pieces, and poetry as well as being encouraged to complete self-selected independent reading on their own.

Curriculum: Using the Readers/Writers Workshop Model we will be covering  different types of Reading and Writing: 

-Informational/ Persuasive
-Literary Analysis
-Narrative

2023- Writing Focus will be on SCR's-Short constructed responses

Grammar and usage- Using IXL

Vocabulary study using Morpheme Study  


2023- (This is suggested- not required)Reading Challenge- The students will be encouraged to attempt a 50 Book Reading Challenge with guidance and instruction provided in the classroom. They will be expected to have with them daily a "Reading Bag" with independent reading pieces as well as classroom pieces that are provided.  More information will be provided in the first few days of school. 

Word Study - Students will be introduced to morphemes ( a word or a part of a word that has a meaning) and will apply this knowledge to new words in order to expand their own vocabulary.
