A teacher's passion for their subject area has the magic to transform their student's learning.
“Kids don't remember what you try to teach them. They remember what you are.” - Jim Henson
The quality of education and ability to get to know each and every student increases when a teacher utilizes the entire classroom! Flexible seating, stations and constant interaction with the students is beneficial, especially in Art.
Art is unique and and very important for each and every student. It is that period in the day when a students get to express themselves, open up their imagination, move around the room and de-stress.
Success in art is achievable for every single student. In art, you are not graded based on right or wrong answers. In art, you are graded on work ethic and craftsmanship. I remind them that they just need to work hard! Mistakes are how you learn; try, then try again! Every child is an artist, they just need to find their niche; whether it be sculpture, drawing or painting!
A teacher should always have the ardor and enthusiasm to learn more in their subject area. A teacher should never feel “done”. There are always new things to learn and new things to teach. I grow as an educator because of my students.
“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn” ― Phil Collins.
As a teacher, you need to respect all cultures, and use your subject area to pass on the importance of these cultures to your students. I not only present, teach and reference many artistic styles and movements, but cultures as well. Cultures throughout history have influenced art and art movements. Students will learn about places such as Egypt, Japan, Italy, Africa as well as others!
The art curriculum will touch upon many genres and styles of art. Students will study art movements such as Pop Art , the Renaissance, Abstraction and Cubism, as well as the ancient art of Africa, Greece & Rome and Japan.
There not only has to be classroom management and discipline, but just as importantly, there has to be laughter and love.
A teacher needs to not only accept what a student can do, but challenge them to do more. In art class, students will not only learn about important art topics, vocabulary and techniques, but students will also enhance their problem solving skills, appreciation for art, artistic confidence and creativity.
Art is extremely kinesthetic and visual!
Students will be exposed to a variety of mediums such as watercolor, paint, oil pastel, colored pencil, crayon, sharpie, marker, collage, clay, paper-mache and more!
Imagination. I believe each and every student needs to utilize their imagination as often as possible in the art room! As we all grow older, we forget what it’s like to use our imagination. As we get older, using our imagination becomes harder and harder to do and becomes lost. But we can’t let our students lose their imagination.
“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” - Albert Einstein.
“There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun” - Pablo Picasso.
