The elementary visual arts program for kindergarten through 2nd grade is a curriculum consisting of 5 units, each based on the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Each unit emphasizes a particular element or principle, but incorporates a variety of additional elements or principles. Students will expand their artistic knowledge within each unit by studying a particular art movement, time in history and influential master artist. During the course of the school year, students will build on terminology and techniques taught and understand the importance of art in our world. Students will experiment and be exposed to a variety of mediums, such as clay, paint and oil pastel. Students will analyze influential artwork, become inspired by the art of different cultures and apply the skills and techniques learned to create beautiful works of art. Students will discover their inner artist and express themselves through creativity!

Visual Art 2 (BA22) (Week 1 - Week 4)
Students begin the school year by creating a work of art that represents who they are. Students reference their personal interests while working their way through the art process. Students begin to explore personal expression and jump start their creative journey. Students will think through how to apply their personal interests to a given theme as well as tell a story within their work of art. Students will begin to learn how to use and apply appropriate art vocabulary.
Visual Art 2 (BA22) (Week 5 - Week 11)
Students will explore the relationships between different colors on the color wheel. Students will understand and apply a variety of color theory terminology. Students will use their new knowledge of color to create an art work inspired by the Pop Art movement. Students will create art that is "popular" or relatable to culture and society. Create a work of art with a specific style, inspired by a popular art movement.
Visual Art 2 (BA22) (Week 12 - Week 20)
Students will explore the proportions (relationship, distance, size) within a human portrait. Students will understand and apply a wide variety of elements of art and principles of design. Students will work in small groups to analyze a human face and apply that knowledge to their works of art. Students will learn about Realism and the Renaissance, including the mystery behind the Mona Lisa. Students will then draw a portrait based on the time periods and art movements discussed.
Visual Art 2 (BA22) (Week 21 - Week 28)
Students will explore the concept of space by drawing a landscape and a still life. Students will learn about overlapping, perspective, positive space, negative space, foreground, middle ground and background. Students will apply this knowledge to their works of art. Students will understand and apply a wide variety of elements of art and principles of design. Students will also build on their knowledge of proportion from the last unit, by applying it to objects instead of people. Students will complete either a still life or a landscape. If completing a still life, students will work in small groups to analyze a staged still life and then individually draw from their perspective and viewpoint. If completing a landscape, students will get to choose a landscape from the options given. Students will learn about master artists who were famous for landscape and still life works of art.

Students will explore additive sculpture. Students will understand how to create sculpture using different mediums, i.e. clay, found object, paper mache, paper, plaster, etc. Students will then create
their own sculpture using one of the mediums discussed. Students will not only create a three-dimensional work of art, but continue to improve their problem solving skills. Students need to think about a work of art that is now considered from all angles, and not just drawn or painted on a flat surface. Students will learn about a variety of sculptors and their unique artwork. Students will also study the sculpture of Africa, Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as more contemporary sculptors who upcycle.
Visual Art 2 (BA22) (Week 34 - Week 40)
Students will expand on their knowledge of color and learn about value (light to dark, monochromatic, tint and shade). Students will learn about Abstract art (including cubism) and will apply this knowledge of value to their artwork. Students will have the freedom to choose their image and then students will translate the image into a cubist style and apply the element of value.

Visual Art K-1 (BA22) (Week 20 - Week 27)
Students will dive into the world of shapes! Students will utilize shapes within their art, whether its drawing, painting or paper collage! Students will learn about Japanese art and culture and create a project based on those visuals. Students will be focusing on shape and color within their work of art. Students will learn about organic and geometric shapes. Knowledge will be built upon as the year progresses, learning more about color, such as warm and cool hues. Students will also learn about textures and patterns found on animals and objects in nature, and other important elements of art and principles of design.
Visual Art K-1 (BA22) (Week 28 - Week 34)
Students will learn about cultures such as India and their creation of Mandala art. Students will get to design their own unique Mandala that represents their own personalities. Students will apply important art concepts such as pattern, symmetry, color, shape, line and more. Students will utilize color, shape and symbols which represent things that are important to them within their works of art.
