original credit and/or acceleration opportunities
FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT
The purpose of this program is to create the opportunity for a student to prove competency and receive credit for a course of study not offered at Sparta High School or for scheduling conflicts. Students have the option to enroll in an original credit and/or accelerated course at their own expense, pending approval from the Director of Student Support Services and the Curriculum Area Supervisor.
Guidelines:
The Original Credit and/or Accelerated courses must be approved by the Director of Student Support Services and curriculum supervisor.
Approval will only be granted for courses not offered at Sparta High School, for remediation of scheduling conflicts, for credit recovery, for advancement, or with special permission from the Director of Student Support Services.
Original Credit and/or Accelerated courses may not be taken to satisfy graduation requirements.
If a request is submitted to address a scheduling conflict, the request must be submitted immediately after receiving your high school schedule.
Original Credit and/or Accelerated courses will adhere to all Sparta High School Counseling Department’s change of schedule procedures.
Original Credit and/or Accelerated courses will be completed during a scheduled open period and/or outside of the school day.
A list of approved courses is listed here but if additional courses are in question, they can be obtained from the counseling office.
In order to receive the school's recommendation for an honors or AP level course, the student must complete the advancement course and EOY exam at the honors level. An 80% average will be required to receive the recommendation for advancement.
If a student does not meet the requirements and chooses to waive into the next level course, they must follow the waiver procedures.
Original Credit and/or Accelerated courses will not count toward GPA and will appear on the Sparta High School transcript as courses taken outside of Sparta Township School District. For example, it will appear on transcript as Algebra II (Edmentum 85%) with a listed grade of P.
All of the above must be approved by the Director of Student Support Services and Curriculum Area Supervisor before enrolling. Courses will appear on a student’s transcript with credits achieved and the institution where the credits were earned. Approved Courses will not be factored in a student’s GPA calculation. Courses must be completed in a timely manner (time specified on the approval form). Courses taken prior to the start of a student’s freshman year will not appear on the Sparta High School transcript under any circumstances.
