Students should have daily opportunities to "do math." "When students work together, their learning increases. They don’t just learn mathematics – they also learn how to work in groups, monitor their own behavior, and interact with peers who have different experiences or ideas" (Lempp, 2017). Our students should be involved in workstations where they complete activities individually, in pairs, or in cooperative groups. The work may be follow-up from whole-group or small-group instruction, ongoing practice of previously taught skills, investigations, math games, or math journaling. In addition, students should work on their personalized i-Ready math path twice a week for 15-20 minutes. Math Workshop should also include at least 10-15 minutes of daily fluency practice.
Teachers may plan a variety of activities for students to complete during Math Workshop. Examples may include:
Independent Practice
Computer Programs (i-Ready & DreamBox)
Games or Puzzles
Math Journaling
