The Bornean Orangutan is not just a species limited
to the island of Borneo but also lives on the island of Sumatra. These islands are located in Indonesia and Sumatra makes part of the Malacca Strait which 2 thirds of all commerce ships pass through. In the past 60 years the populations have declined by more than half. Their Bornean and Sumatran habitat due to deforestation has been decimated and only 45 percent remains in tact. The most critical of the subspecies is the north west orangutan. The northwest orangutan count today is an insignificant number around 1500 individuals while the largest orangutan count of the central Bornean Orangutan is still not substantial but at least considerable at 35000 individuals. The orangutan populations have plummeted because of logging for paper and wood. There also has been specific hunting or poaching of these animals and has (sadly) been successful. Their natural habitat include lowland rainforests tropical, swamp, and mountain forests. The modern day population is around 104700 and they are nationally considered a critically endangered species. At this rate they will slowly spiral into extinction.
In the early 20 century European colonists came to Africa to settle. When they came Rhinos were plentiful and were widely considered pests. They were indifferently killed for pleasure and sport. The rhino population slowly declined and many subspecies and have gone extinct. The hunting evolved into poaching. Across Asia Rhino horns are thought to have healing properties even though they are made of mostly Keratin . Keratin is the same substance your fingernails are made of. The existing population today is less than 5,000. If numbers get any smaller they will go past the point of no return. Once the population of a species goes under a certain number they will acquire defects because of in-breading. Thus pure bread black rhinos will spiral into extinction. The natural habitat for rhinos are subtropical grasslands, savannas, and Xeric shrub lands. These animals are in critical condition and the plea is out. The clock is ticking.
