Mission Statement

The mission of the Matthey MS Band is to provide a positive, enjoyable, family environment for each member and director while upholding high standards of performance and maintaining integrity to enrich our lives and the lives of those around us, uniting a diverse group of individuals for the purpose of pursuing our passion for music.

Biography

Greg Garcia

Greg Garcia is the Director of Bands at Matthey MS (Southside ISD), a position he has held since 2008. Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Garcia was the assistant band director at Southside MS (Southside ISD) from 1999-2008. His responsibilities include teaching beginning band classes, advanced band classes and jazz band.

The emphasis of the music program has been to promote a balance between competition and the enjoyment of creating music.

In 1999, Mr. Garcia initiated a middle school jazz program at Southside ISD. Student requested for the jazz program to be implemented at the high school level to continue with their jazz education. The program continues in all three secondary campuses. During Mr. Garcia's tenure as the head director, Southside MS and Matthey MS has earned consecutive UIL First Division and/or UIL Sweepstakes Awards. Since 1999, students, under Mr. Garcia's direction, have auditioned and placed in the Middle School Region Honor Bands.

Mr. Garcia earned his Bachelor of Music from the University of the Incarnate Word and his Masters of Education from Stephen F Austin State University. As an active musician, Mr. Garcia has performed with various groups including the Josephine Theater Pit Orchestra, the San Pedro Playhouse Pit Orchestra, the San Antonio Municipal Band, the Heart of Texas Concert Band, the Henri Brun Modern Latino Big Band, the Primetime Jazz Orchestra, the San Antonio Jazz Orchestra, the Community Bible Church Orchestra and is currently in the Cornerstone Church Orchestra and Christian Faith Center Praise Team, Dilley, TX as a guest soloist. Mr. Garcia has performed with notable musicians such as the legendary group The Temptations, Doc Severinsen - former band leader of the Tonight Show, Christian singers Tommy Walker and most recently with Mac Powell.

Mr. Garcia's professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, and Texas Bandmasters Association. Mr. Garcia has served as an adjudicator for music festivals and UIL contests. His pride and joy is his wife, Nancy and son, David.

Mr. Rodriguez

Mr. Rodriguez is a graduate from Texas A and M University-Kingsville where he studied and earned a degree in Music Education. He began his teaching career at Losoya Middle School in 2014 where he taught beginning band classes for 5 years. He is currently the Assistant Band Director at Matthey Middle School.



Symphonic band earned a Sweepstakes

The Matthey MS Symphonic band earned a Sweepstakes rating, the highest rating, at their UIL Concert and Sight-reading Evaluation. A sweepstake is a First Division rating from the six judges evaluating the group. Three judges evaluated the concert portion on three music previously prepared, each judge award the group a First division. In Sight-reading the group was given a piece of music not previously seen or rehearsed and were given seven minutes to study without making a sound on their instruments. Each of the three judges awarded the group a First division rating. Mr. Garcia and Mr. Rodriguez are very proud of the students’ success.
