Health Sciences

The Health Science career cluster focuses on planning, managing, and providing therapeutic services, diagnostics services, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development. This career cluster includes occupations ranging from medical assistant, registered nurse, and physical therapist to forensic science technician and athletic trainer.

PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH SCIENCE

This course is designed to develop health care specific knowledge and skills in effective communications, ethical and legal responsibilities, client care, safety, first aid, and CPR. This course prepares the student for the transition to clinical or work based experiences in the healthcare field.

Fee: The CPR card will cost the student approximately $40.

HONORS MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

This course will focus on the language of current health technology. Language, diagnosis, medical procedures, and diseases are emphasized.

HEALTH SCIENCE THEORY

The Health Science Theory course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills relate to a wide variety of health careers. Students will employ hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development.

PRACTICUM IN HEALTH SCIENCE

The Practicum in Health Science course is designed to give students practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills within this career pathway. Practicum experiences occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the participating students’ strengths and levels of experience.

Exercise Science, Wellness, and Restoration

The Exercise Science, Wellness, and Restoration program of study focuses on occupational and educational opportunities associated with assisting patients with maintaining physical, mental, and emotional health. This program of study includes researching diet and exercise needed to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle and exploring techniques to help patients recover from injury, illness, or disease.

KINESIOLOGY I

This course will give the student basic knowledge in the fields of athletic training and sports medicine. Topics such as: anatomy, physiology, injury mechanisms, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation concepts will be studied. This course is beneficial to a student planning to enter a sports medicine related field and is strongly recommended for student athletic trainers.

KINESIOLOGY II

Kinesiology II is designed for students in the student athletic training program, and provides a more in-depth study and application of the components of sports medicine. Individualized and independent assignments will be included in this course. This course will involve outside of class time, homework, and time required working with athletes and athletic teams.

CAREER PREP I (ATHLETIC TRAINING)

Career Prep I will provide a logical progression for students that have advanced through the sports medicine courses and provide them with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained to athletic injury recognition, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation through research investigations and applications related to sports medicine. The course will provide opportunities for advanced students in the sports medicine program to research, investigate, prepare, and present article reviews, case studies, research projects, visual poster presentations, and multimedia presentations on instructor-approved topics. The athletic training students will continue to perform the assigned duties and responsibilities in the operation of the athletic training room under the supervision of a licensed athletic trainer. These duties will prepare the students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the sports medicine course curriculum. The required duties will be a portion of the grade earned in the course.

Biomedical Science

The Biomedical Science program of study focuses on occupational and educational opportunities associated with the study of biology and medicine. This program of study includes researching and diagnosing diseases, pre-existing conditions, and other determinants of health. Students will also practice patient care and communication.

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY

This is a regular level course in the study of human Anatomy and Physiology. Using a basic text, students will study all major body systems. This inquiry-oriented course is designed for the student who is considering a career in the biological, medical, or health-related fields, but has no previous knowledge of medical terminology with an overview of body systems. Students will spend extensive time dissecting specimens including rats, sheep brains, pig hearts, and cats.

HONORS BIOTECHNOLOGY I

Students enrolled in this course will apply advanced academic knowledge and skills to the emerging fields of biotechnology such as agricultural, medical, regulatory, and forensics. Students will have the opportunity to use sophisticated laboratory equipment, perform statistical analysis, and practice quality-control techniques. Students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a health science career through further education and employment. During the spring semester, this course will place CMA students into a variety of clinical settings within the community. Students should accumulate 40 internship hours during the Spring Semester. Class time will be provided to accumulate some of the required hours. Hours of service will be flexible, per the mentor’s schedule. As part of this course evaluation, mentors will submit student performance evaluations. Students who enroll in this course must provide their own transportation to the medical facilities.

HONORS PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

Pathophysiology is a year-long class where we learn about disease and how it affects each system in the human body. We learn through real-world case studies and collaborate in order to diagnose complex cases. You will learn in a classroom and science lab in order to give you hands-on, engaging, and rigorous material.
