Basketball is an exciting game full of great plays, highlights, exciting moments, nervous moments and more. Basketball has a history of tournaments. An example is March Madness for college and NBA. NBA finals for NBA and more. This month we have a tournament, the Fairfax tournament. The tournament is located at Fairfax, MO. This time, the high school kids play. The seats are (1) St Joe Christian, (2) Rock Port, (3) East Atchison, (4) Nodaway Valley, (5) South Holt, (6) Falls City for the boys and girls. The tournaments last one week long from Jan 10-15th. The tournament started way back in 1932. This year is the 90th annual tournament. So far within the last 12 years South Holt has won at least 3 of these tournaments. This year is a different story, leading up to the championship game, South Holt lost to Saint Joe Christian by 1, South Holt won against Nodaway Valley by 4 and then eventually lost to East Atchison in the championship game. The ladies and the boys both got 2nd place this year in the tournament.

I interviewed Kal Mcfarland for wrestling. Kal said that Dawson Fansher and Coach Petersen got him into wrestling. His favorite move to do is the Double Blast. Kal likes wrestling because it gives him something to do instead of sitting around all day. When he doesn't win a match him and Coach Peterson watch the video of the wrestling match. After watching the video they practice what things that could be improved. When they win, they just do a little practicing. He has only won a 3rd of his matches.

South Holt's Trap team has 11 students this year. Trap shooting is a sport where you will are 16 yards from a trother and when you are ready you will say "pull." Then, an orange clay pigeon will go flying in a random direction and you try to shoot it. There are 2 rounds of 25, so you are trying to shoot 50 in total. You are shooting with 4 other people on the line. There are 5 stations left to right. Some of the things that you need to shoot trap are a shotgun, shells, safety glasses, ear protection, shooting vest and clay pigeons. The goal of trap is to try to hit all of the clay pigeons. In trap you can make a lot of new friends from different schools. Your team is together going against different schools. All of their trap shoots are at KCTA and their next shoot is February 12. There are 8 trap shoots in all. Good luck this year South Holt!

The high school girls basketball season has started off pretty good with a record of nine wins and six losses. They currently have the third best record in the class one district. The head coach of the team is Mr. Petersen and the assistant coach is Ms. Schulte. There are eight players on the team, two in 12th grade, two in 11th grade, two in 10th grade, and two in 9th grade. The players include Rayleigh Guyer (12th grade), Chloee Prussman (12th grade), Zoey Prussman (11th grade), Riley Schroeder (11th grade), Olivia Prussman (10th grade), Abigail Sipes (10th grade), Katie Mendenhall (9th grade), and Mylee Prussman (9th grade). I asked assistant coach Ms. Schulte “What is your favorite part about coaching?” She said “Watching them improve and make progress.” Go Knights!

What is a Scholar Bowl? Scholar Bowl is when they ask trivia questions on many different subjects. It's kind of like jeopardy, but in teams. The team that answers the most questions wins the game. They also play different schools in competitions. The person that runs it is Mr. Scheuerell. Scholar Bowl is for Junior high and High school students. Some of the upcoming meets are; Junior High: Jan 6 SH at Rock Port, Jan 13 SH at West Nodaway, Jan 20 SH, Jan 27 SH at South Nodaway. High School: March 3 SH at South Nodaway, March 8 SH at Union Star, March 15 SH at Mound City, March 17 SH, March 22 SH at Stewartsville, March 30 meet conference. Junior High has had 2 wins and 5 losses.

The King City Tournament took place from January 24th to February 1st for the 42nd annual girls basketball team and 90th annual boys basketball team. Both teams showed up to play their hardest. On the first night of the King City tournament the Lady Knights played OSHS but unfortunately did not win the first round with a score of 48-54. The South Holt boys played Northeast Nodaway but did not win with a score of 38-50. The Lady knights did defeat NE Nodaway! With a score of 54-38. The Boys won against King City with a score of 62-45. Both the Boys and Girls won on the 26th. The Lady Knights lost to Maysville with a score of 33-37.The Boys lost to OSHS with a score of 41-50.
