The 13th largest in Iowa, the Southeast Polk Community School District is comprised of Runnells, Altoona, Mitchellville, parts of Pleasant Hill, Bondurant, Des Moines, and surrounding rural areas. The district was formed by a consolidation of several districts in 1962 and now operates eleven attendance centers: a high school, middle school, sixth grade center, and eight elementary schools.
The Department of Music at Southeast Polk Junior High School offers students multiple performing ensembles conducted by 4 full time faculty members. The choirs at the Junior High present two concerts per year. Vocal students have auditioned and been accepted into various honors choirs across the state of Iowa including OPUS Honor Choir. Sudden Impulse is the building's competitive show choir which travels around the state to multiple competitions each year. After school opportunities include Sudden Impulse, and Junior High Musical.

KATHARINE HYLAND joined the Southeast Polk Community School District in the Fall of 2021. Mrs. Hyland conducts the 8th and 9th grade Treble Choir, Bass Choir, Flex Choir, and music directs the JH musical She is also the artistic director for the junior high show choir, Sudden Impulse.
Mrs. Hyland grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and graduated from Washington High School before attending Luther College. During her time at Luther, Ms. Hyland was involved in Aurora, Cathedral and Collegiate Choir, Fall Opera Scenes, several community theater productions and served an internship for the Decorah Childrens Chorus.
After graduation, Mrs. Hyland taught K-4 General music in Farnhamville, Iowa and K-8 General Music/Choir in Des Moines. In her free time Mrs. Hyland has music directed and performed with the Ames Community Theater, Starlighters II Community Theater and various others. In total she has been a part of 35+ productions so far.
