Neurotypical Adults

Reading across the lifespan

The overarching goal of this research is to gain insight into variables that influence reading fluency and prosody in adults. This line of research examines reading characteristics amongst genders, age groups, educational levels and across various reading stimuli.

Integration of Partial Information Within and Across Modalities

The extent to which processing of partial information is a sensory-specific process (i.e., mechanisms for processing partial auditory information are different than mechanisms for processing partial visual information) or is a sensory-general process (i.e., all partial information is processed by the same cognitive process) remains in question. The purpose of this research is to investigate: 1) how partial information is integrated within a single modality for sentence recognition, and 2) how partial information across two modalities (i.e., speech and text) might be combined to facilitate sentence recognition. This research provides additional insight into multimodal processing of auditory or visual partial information, particularly the time course and level of processing. Further knowledge about this relationship will provide insight into the development and improvement of applications using visual information for assistive listening devices or treatment strategies involving auditory input for individuals with reading impairments.
