Recovery Groups

Do you have Aphasia?

A person with aphasia may have one or more of the following symptoms:

• Difficulty coming up with the right words to say

• Difficulty understanding the speech of other people

• Difficulty reading & writing

What is AN Aphasia Recovery Group?

At the University of South Alabama, persons with aphasia gather weekly to work on their communication skills with other persons with aphasia. The group is facilitated by graduate speech-language pathology students and supervised by a certified speech-language pathologist. Group members engage in informal conversation with each other and more structured tasks, games, and activities to work on their communication skills. Tasks target both spoken and written communication.

Benefits of Attending Aphasia recovery Group

Group members receive speech-language therapy to improve their communication with their family members, friends, and caregivers. This is done by working on communication in a group setting with other individuals who have similar problems.

Group therapy also provides the opportunity for individuals to interact with and receive support from other persons who have suffered a stroke and have aphasia.
