What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
All my life, music is all I’ve known. I used to be really shy and standoffish as a child but music is what allowed me to find my confidence and light. My creative gift is the one thing that can’t be taken away from me nor does it “run out.” Singing and writing feels easy and natural for me. I’m in my own world and I lose track of time from having so much fun. I realized I wanted to pursue a career in music when it hit me that I could make a living off of having fun and I saw that my writing and voice emotionally moved people. That is when I realized how much power I possessed within my artistry. Seeing people tear up when I sing makes me tear up! It’s a different type of love and connection that I cannot explain.
Your full name, Radharani, means "graceful Indian queen." How has your cultural heritage influenced your music and artistry?
I feel very honored and blessed to have the name Radharani. When I was in elementary school I didn’t like it because it was “different” and no one ever knew how to say or spell it correctly. Now I completely embrace it! I grew up in what I personally call a ‘dual faith’ household. My sisters and I grew up going to Hindu Temples with my Dad, we were strict vegetarians, we learned different chants, and at the same time we still went to Church on Sundays. This type of cultural upbringing is not at all common for typical first generation Filipino families. Between Catholicism and Hinduism there are a lot of different ideologies that made me very open minded at a young age. I sang in a Church choir while I was learning Indian songs and scales. This culturally enriching experience has certainly contributed to my artistry. On top of that, Filipinos in general are very musical and love karaoke, so all of these elements get thrown into my proverbial creative pot.
What was your experience like performing on The Voice and being a finalist on Adam Levine’s team? How did that shape your career?
Performing on The Voice was absolutely a dream come true! It was a goal I promised myself I would achieve ever since the first season came out in 2011. It was a very validating, life changing, and reassuring experience that made me realize that I can actually take this to a national level. Performing in front of America and award winning music legends on live television gave me a glimpse of my future. I still chase that high to this day and it essentially expedited my decision to be a singer songwriter full time. Sometimes I go back and watch the videos whenever I feel creatively drained. My experience on The Voice has shaped not only my career but my mindset. The Voice gave me real-time experience of what the music entertainment industry looks like. Now that I am fully independent, I’m ready to apply all those learning moments and lessons into my future endeavors.
You've had the honor of performing the National Anthem for some major events — the NBA, NY Red Bulls, and NJ Governor Phil Murphy. Describe those experiences, and how do they compare to other live shows?
Performing The National Anthem is always very exciting for me no matter where I am. Whenever I’m requested to sing The National Anthem the events are typically more professional and corporate. There is a level of patriotism and respect when singing The Star Spangled Banner and so I take pride when I am the representative to do so. I was so honored to be invited to sing The Anthem for the NBA, NFL, NY RedBulls, and even NJ Governor Phil Murphy!
Every performance always feels like a full circle moment. Singing in stadiums that hold thousands of people is unexplainable. My voice echoes throughout the stands and the audience’s roars give me extreme levels of adrenaline and excitement every time. When I sang for Gov. Murphy’s inauguration, it was a different kind of thrill. As a NJ Native and Montclair State University graduate, this was a milestone to stand and sing before powerful people who have the authority to create change. As for my personal live shows, I can be more glitzy, free, and engaging on stage. I get to tell my story and connect with the audience more intimately. I feel at home when I am on stage.
Collaborating with Tony Award-winning director Jhett Tolentino for the film "Asian Persuasion" must have been exciting. How was the experience and what was the creative process like?
Asian Persuasion was the first film / sync placement / songwriting opportunity I was ever given! Hearing my voice and song in a movie was something my younger self would’ve thought was far-fetched and complicated. The creative process was much different compared to how I typically write my own songs. After meeting Jhett Tolentino in Montclair, NJ for brunch he sent over the movie script for me to read through. I created a song exclusively tailored to the film and a whopping two minutes and thirty two seconds of the song “In Your Favor” was placed in the film! I placed myself in the shoes of both characters and found middle ground to musically illustrate their grief and sadness into an acoustic ballad. This was definitely a new challenge for me but I loved every moment of it. The final product for all 3 songs came out amazing. I really enjoyed working with Jhett and would happily welcome any future collaborations with him.
Meek Mill's use of your original sample in his song "Who You Voting For?" in 2024 is a significant milestone. How did this collaboration unfold, what does it mean to you, and what was it like hearing your work featured in his song?
I spent my whole year of 2024 very diligently sharpening my songwriting skills. In the years prior, I was in a deep creative depression and so I worked hard to fall in love with music again. It was hard for me to write full songs so I began making samples with absolutely no expectation of anyone really liking them. I started exposing my ears to new genres like gospel, alternative, and boom bap hip hop. I then found an app called Splice and started messing around layering vocals with experimental vocal plugins.
One day, I was on Youtube listening to beats when I stumbled upon a Florida producer named Regi. I shared with Regi an original sample and he quickly opened the door for me with his industry connections. About 3 months later, Meek Mill’s producer reached out to me saying that Meek wrote a song with my vocal sample! Although he did not formally drop it on DSP’s (Digital Streaming Platforms) it was still a blessing that brought me to tears hearing my voice and my writing on the same track as legendary hip hop artist, Meek Mill. Knowing that my first ever sample placement was with Meek Mill was extremely validating and life changing for me. I now see my potential in a different light after that moment. There is no slowing down.
What has been your greatest challenge as an artist and what have you learned from it?
The biggest challenge that comes to mind throughout my artist journey was the process of becoming fully independent. Since I was 17, I always had someone in the picture “dictating my creative vision.” For almost all of my life, I felt like a puppet to someone else's dream. My incompetence of the music industry was weaponized against me and I was taken advantage of for years. When I became fully independent it felt like I was dropped on an empty island in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no direction. I realized I never truly knew who I was as an artist and it felt like I was starting all over again... and again... and again... it still feels this way sometimes. But I do not see myself as a victim. I see it all as a lesson and blessing in disguise. Everything needed to happen the way it did so I could learn the importance of protecting my artwork. The Music business can be overwhelming but it is extremely necessary for independent artists to understand the ins and outs if they want to pursue music professionally!
If your career were a movie, what would be the title of the next chapter — and what would the opening scene look like?
If my life was a movie, the next chapter would be called “trust yourself.” The opening scene would be more symbolic and metaphorical. It’d be a scene of me placing my hand on a mirror staring at myself saying “trust yourself.” Sometimes it’s scary to think about diving in and trusting your gifts to keep you afloat - for the rest of your life at that. Since I was in college, I’ve always done a lot of mirror work where I read positive affirmations to myself to empower my creativity. I write uplifting messages on my mirror that I look at everyday to help me stay intuitive and grounded. I’m a firm believer in “what you think you become” and so the mirror to me is a symbol of reflection and transformation.
How would you describe your experience working with Sound Logic?
My experience working with Sound Logic has been absolutely amazing. Sound Logic has been a safe space for me to learn, ask questions, and seek legal counsel whenever I need. The Sound Logic team is so selfless and attentive when it comes to working with independent artists. They’ve been an integral part of my music journey for years now. They inspire me to keep going and show me that pursuing music independently is very much attainable. Not only will they help address your situation but they’ll continue to support and provide you with resources to help expand your network. Sound Logic advocates to build community and opportunity not just locally but globally. Believe me when I say, they go above and beyond! I’m very blessed to have Sound Logic on my team.
What advice would you give to emerging artists?
“Everyone has a gift, but it is only a gift if you share it.” Good or bad, keep creating and share your work! The opposite of depression is expression! Put it out because one day it’ll be really rewarding to look back and visually see your growth. In addition, when I made the mental shift to ‘live creatively,’ the journey became more fun. What I mean by this is that I began to see art in absolutely everything. When I’d go about my day, I’d pick up inspiration from just being outside. I could hear a siren and be like “that could be a sample!” or I could look at a railroad and think to myself “this is a great location for a music video!” I believe when you naturally live and think creatively, inspiration doesn’t run out. To me, being an artist is more than creating songs, it’s realizing your physical existence, your soul, and mind as art. Lastly, I believe staying grounded and grateful is also key. Don’t create art in exchange for clout and material things, create because it genuinely makes your soul feel happy. Do what feels true and authentic.
With a diverse range of experiences under your belt, from television appearances to film collaborations, what's next for you? What are some of your upcoming projects or goals for 2025 that you're excited about? Are there any new genres or styles you’re interested in exploring?
In 2025 without a doubt I’m gonna do it all. I feel that I already am! I’ll be releasing new music and let’s just say everyone will see my many colors and personalities. It’s going to be a lot of fun! I’m very excited to share my vision on my own terms. I want to establish that I am more than a singer. I am a visionary and storyteller. I’ll be diving into house music, RNB, hip hop, vintage soul, and even pop alternative genres.
Before I was independent, I was mostly an RNB Pop artist but this time I will not be confined to just one box. Everything I’ll be putting out will be very intentional, artistic, and well thought out. I want to share all of my talents because for the longest time I never felt confident enough to share all of my layers.
In the next 3 years, people will see a lot of creative growth with all the content I put out. It’s more than the music! I also plan to start podcasting, acting, designing merch, and even producing some of my own material for the first time! With all the behind the scenes studying and building I’ve been doing, I’m excited to see what opportunities will present themselves.
BONUS: If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
It would be a dream to collaborate with Bruno Mars. Bruno Mars seems to have the songwriting game figured out. He has such a keen ear for making timeless hits. I grew up learning to sing and belt high notes to his music. I love how he is able to go back in time to create an 80’s or classic 90’s sounding hit. He has amazing vocal technique that radiates confidence all around. Can’t forget he’s part Filipino as well! Creating a song and being on stage with him would be a dream come true!
