A lens is a tool used to bring light to a fixed focal point. The characteristics of each lens determined the focal length, and the aperture (measured in F-stops) which determines the depth of field.Â
There are two basic category of lenses:
Prime Lenses
Known for their sharpness and clarity. They are often used in scenes where detail and image quality are paramount. Prime lenses also tend to have wider apertures, which allow for better low-light performance and a shallower depth of field, ideal for close-ups and portraits.
Zoom Lenses
Offer a range of focal lengths and are versatile for various shooting conditions. They allow cinematographers to change the composition of a shot without physically moving the camera.
