[2026.05.22] Role of a Principal Investigator
As a professor and Principal Investigator, I believe that my role is to guide students and researchers in the right direction while helping them develop a strong sense of responsibility and scientific integrity. At the same time, I do not believe that a PI should remain only as a strict leader. In many cases, a PI should also stand beside students as a colleague, mentor, teacher, and sometimes even as a friend throughout the research journey.
However, achieving such an ideal balance is not easy. If students expect a leader who can rapidly produce fancy and immediate results, I may be somewhat different from that image. I tend to value deeper understanding, sustainable growth, and the process of developing independent researchers rather than pursuing only short-term achievements.
Still, I often ask myself whether producing fast and flashy outcomes is truly the most important goal in research. In the end, I believe that genuine scientific progress is built not only on results, but also on trust, responsibility, collaboration, and the growth of people who will continue the research in the future.
Although finding the best solution in research may not always be easy, I believe that if we are moving in the right direction, the journey itself, even when it is painful and challenging, will ultimately lead to rewarding and meaningful outcomes.
Let's keep going!
