Graphic Design Project: Children's Book Creation (6-10 Pages)
Objective:
In this collaborative project, you will design and illustrate a fully realized children’s book. This assignment challenges you to combine storytelling, design, typography, and illustration into a polished final product suitable for a young audience. You may work solo or in a group of up to three students.
Concept Development:
Brainstorm ideas as a group or individually.
Submit a one-page proposal including:
Target age range
Summary of the story (beginning, middle, end)
Main characters
Visual style inspiration/mood board
Story & Layout Planning:
Finalize script (story text for each page).
Create thumbnail sketches of all pages (rough layout and placement of text/illustrations).
Determine font choices and color palette.
Setting, where does the story take Place?
Who are/is the main character?
What is the conflict? What is the journey of the characters?
What is the resolution or how does the story end? Childrens books almost always have a learning moment.
A story that is closest to the truth is the most relevant and belivable.
3. Illustration & Design Execution:
Use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Procreate (or similar tools) to digitally illustrate each page.
Integrate typography in a way that complements the visuals and supports readability.
Ensure consistent margins, alignment, and design elements.
4. Final Presentation:
Compile pages into a digital book format (jpg).
Include a front cover, back cover, and title page.
Present your book to the class with a short explanation of your process and choices.
Design Requirements:
6–10 fully illustrated pages (not including cover or title page).
Original characters and story.
Consistent illustration style.
Child-appropriate typography (legible, engaging).
Proper grammar and spelling.
Creativity & Originality (20%) – Story and visuals are imaginative and engaging.
Design & Layout (20%) – Page layout enhances readability and visual flow.
Illustration Quality (20%) – Visuals are polished and appropriate for the target age.
Typography & Text Integration (15%) – Fonts are legible and integrated effectively with illustrations.
Collaboration & Effort (15%) – Clear evidence of planning, teamwork (if in a group), and time investment.
Final Presentation (10%) – Clear explanation of choices and clean, complete submission.
