Due May 9: Students can apply for a $500 scholarship thanks to the Levitt Family Charitable Foundation.
The Sunshine Closet of Maynard H. Jackson High School is the brainchild of MJHS social worker, Takana “Connie” Petty, MSW. Established in 2015, the Sunshine Closet was created out of a need to support at-risk students so that they can better focus on school. Volunteers work closely with and at the direction of the school social workers to meet the identified needs of MJHS students and families.
The MJHS Sunshine Closet offers support to students facing homelessness, housing instability, and other hardships. As resources allow, we help ease their burden so students stay in school and focus on their education. Directed by the Social Work Department at Maynard Jackson High School, donations go directly towards various programs that assist students and their families with essential needs. While we can’t solve every challenge, your support helps provide stability and relief where it’s needed most.
We were ecstatic with donations to our annual Winter Break Drive. We supported around 32 MJHS students experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity that have been identified by our school social workers. Each December break, the Sunshine Closet offers support with a holiday break gift bag which includes some basic toiletries (soap, toothbrush, deodorant, lip balm, etc.), few sweets/snacks, socks/mittens/hats, feminine hygiene products, and gift cards to grocery stores, restaurants, and activities like AMC or other places.
Thanks to your generosity this school year, the Maynard Jackson High School Social Workers were able to present gift cards to students prior to the winter break, along with candy, a Braves scarf & hat, gloves, socks, hygiene products, fidget toys and tickets to the Zoo Atlanta, MODA, Oakland Cemetery membership and Carlos Museum.
WOW! The response was overwhelming to our Emergency Food Drive Support campaign! We collected over $6,000 to help families with grocery store gift cards. We have suspended this campaign. Your donations are greatly appreciated!
This is where the program first took root, and our commitment continues. We maintain a school resource closet, affectionately called "The Sunshine Closet", accessible to school social workers, to provide essential items that support students' well-being and success throughout the school year. Stocked with snacks, clothing, school supplies, and basic hygiene products, this vital resource is available to any student in need of extra support. Your donation helps keep our closet full and ready to assist.
MJHS social workers run a variety of programs that support students in meaningful ways. These include new and long-standing initiatives that provide mentorship, develop leadership skills, offer comfort in times of crisis, and teach essential life skills such as cooking and nutrition. As resources allow, we support these programs by providing funding for necessary supplies, end-of-year or semester celebrations, snacks, and more.
Your donation directly supports these programs, helping students grow, learn, and thrive.
The Sunshine Closet holds two annual drives to support MJHS homeless and housing insecure students during Winter and Spring breaks. When school is out of session, many of these students lack access to food, necessities, and safe indoor spaces. To help, we raise funds to provide gift cards for restaurants, grocery stores, essential items, and activities, ensuring they have the support they need.
Our Winter Break Drive is our largest, as students are out of school for an extended period. The Spring Break Drive is held if additional funds are available.
Throughout the school year, gift cards play a crucial role in supporting students. They help defray food costs and provide transportation assistance for students who want to participate in after-school activities but lack a vehicle or cannot afford transportation expenses. Your generosity ensures that every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and engage fully in their education.
When emergencies arise, we strive to support families in need as our resources allow. In the past, we have provided assistance with temporary hotel stays for homeless families, medical expenses, funeral costs, essential items after apartment fires, and utility shortages. Your donation can help ensure that families facing unexpected hardships receive the support they need during their most challenging times.
Senior year is a special milestone, but the costs can be a challenge for many students and their family. For 2025, Senior dues started at $281 per student. As resources allow, we help bridge the financial gaps for families in need, ensuring more students can participate in senior activities and attend graduation.
Prom is often a right of passage in high school but it can be very expensive to attend. For 2026, tickets alone cost $150 per person. As resources allow, we help bridge the financial gaps for families in need, ensuring more students can participate and attend their senior prom.
While families contribute toward these expenses, our support helps cover the remaining costs as resources allow.
We provide need-based scholarships to MJHS seniors through an application process, helping to open doors for their future. These scholarships are designed to support post-high school education, including college, apprenticeships, military service, and other technical training. Your donation directly impacts the educational journeys of our students, helping them take the next step toward a successful future.
Applicants can apply here through May 9, 2026
We provide dorm items to graduating seniors with demonstrated need. We have found that even students who receive full financial aid packages, may struggle to pull together the initial supply of items they need to move into a dorm room. We provide dorm kits to include items like: bedding, towels, basic kitchenware, shower caddy, garbage can, lamp, school supplies, laundry hamper and detergent and the like to help make the move to college an easier one.
