It actually started in 2011...
Sean Connors had started to do theater in Kansas City, MO at a company called "She & Her Productions". They had this great concept of a monthly Cabaret in their own space. Sean participated every month except one all the way through May 2012 when She and Her moved out of the space. Sean wanted to bring the concept back to St. Joseph.
Talking with various friends in the theater, singing, and variety circuit, a core group came together and performed our first Cabaret in August 2012 at Fosters Martini Bar. We had a second event at The Ground Round and various other locales in St. Joseph. Sean met up with an old friend David Sandy who partnered with him and the Paradox Theater in producing the next few shows. That partnership is what you see to this day. Just a rag tag group of performers who enjoy putting on a show!
In late 2017 we started the journey to become a 501c3 not for profit charity. We received the letter in early January 2018 but it was backdated to 9/20/17. With our new status, we decided to solicit sponsors to cover our rent, thus freeing our performers the burden of becoming sales people. We also took our admission charge of $5 and started doing raffles of all sorts of stuff and gave those proceeds to various charities. To date we have given about $1850 total to 4 groups; CHS Choir Boosters, The Crossing (8th Street Drop in Shelter), and the YWCA Shelter Children's Program and the Deborah Joy Bollman Memorial Scholarship. At our Christmas 2018 show, we donated to Heartwarmers of St. Joseph. (A charity that provides small heaters free of charge to people in need).
In late 2018 we learned that our gracious hosts, the Helton family with the Gallery Deli, were not renewing their lease on the space. The venue has a new lease and will be renamed "The Metropolitan" with owners Brian Myers and Amy Heath. We look forward to working with you in our desire to accent the arts in St. Joseph.
So far in 2019, the Something Else Cabaret has had two shows, one in March to support St. Joseph Youth Chorale, and one in June to support The Royal Family Kids Camp. We generally skip a mid-summer show due to vacations and other events so our next show will be 8/16/19 to support the Helen L. Connors Memorial Scholarship. She was the matriarch of the Connors' family and the reason that they developed the abilities they were given. I guess you could say it's her fault that we even exist. Kidding aside, the Cabaret is beyond excited to support this new opportunity for this show.
Our mission statement could easily be summed up by three words. "Partnering and Performing." Let us partner with you.
