HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN FLASHCARDS?
Always Write Noun with Article on your flashcard, to establish its gender.
You have to memorise the noun with the article: it should form one single information in your head.
Writing other “little words” such as definite, French indefinite, partitive articles, possessive and demonstrative adjectives may help as well.
Example : for the word “confiture” (jam) : la confiture, une confiture, de la confiture, ma confiture, cette confiture…
Mention the type of word on your flashcard
Whether it is a noun, preposition, adjective, regular or irregular, plural or singular and other associated words with your main word on the flashcard.
Example : for the feminine word “amie” the possessive adjective is going to be “mon” not “ma” (to avoid a shock of vowels). So you should write “une amie”, but also for sure “mon amie”. Since there is a strong liaison, write “mon N-amie” also. If it’s weird to you, also note that “mon ami” (masculine) and “mon amie” – feminine, are pronounced the same way.
Draw pictures
Establish better picture and word association that you will remember over a long period. Use your photographic memory by drawing appropriate pictures with the word on your flashcard.
Give examples using your word in a sentence construction
Include an example of a sentence in which the main word can be used. It establishes linking between concepts, more confidence in usage and fluency. Get someone to check your sentences or take help online on our discussion forum. You can also write to us and we will solve your queries.
Example: J’adore la confiture de fraises de mon amie Cristine. (I love my friend’s Cristine strawberry jam). In a sentence such as this one, not only are you using “mon amie” but also “la confiture”. And without noticing it, you are using “confiture DE fraises” which will become natural for you (versus confiture à la fraise which is a common mistake).
Write the pronunciation for each word
It is important that you know how to pronounce a word along with knowing its meaning. Even during practice with flash cards, say the words out loud.
