Assignment 1:
Part 1: Take 3 minutes to mindfully breathe and listen to the video above of the amazing Cleveland Orchestra. Feel free to lie down, turn off the lights, and breathe deeply while listening to the music.
Part 2: Japanese Spring Songs. Use the videos below to explore the songs: Sakura and Jan Ken Pon. Both of these are Japanese songs.
Sakura means cheery blossom in Japanese. At this time of year, the beautiful Japanese cherry blossom trees begin to bloom. The cherry blossom is the Japanese national flower, but it is also a sign of spring.
Jan Ken Pon is the game rock, paper scissors in Japanese. Have fun playing me virtually in rock, paper scissors, and playing your family members!
The lyrics we sang in class are the 2nd verse. Try to sing along with the first verse!
Have fun playing rock, paper, scissors!
Here is a video for Tambores, a Brazilian song, that my friend and teacher, Estavao, shared with me. I hope you enjoy all of these and have fun making music with your family.
This is super fun hand clapping game from Brazil. My friend and teacher, Estavao, taught it to me a few years ago.
Here is Estavao teaching this song on YouTube with the Spanish Group, Groupo Trii. I hope you enjoy this video. I love watching Estavao, he is so much fun!
I have been singing this song since I was in Elementary school. I love it and I know many of you do too!
You can clap the rhythms, or grab a musical instrument (or spoons or rice in a jar) and play along!
This week I am asking you to create your own staff at home. Watch the first video to get ideas for materials to build your own staff. Then, you can write on the staff with me for the next video. If you want, you can send me a picture of your staff with a melody! I would love to see your creativity!
Also, I recorded two canons for you to learn. Try singing along with the practice video, then see if you can sing it in canon with me! I had a blast making the canon videos using the app Acappella. I hope you enjoy singing along with me!

This week I am very excited to share with you... the cup game! I learned this game when I was a fourth grade student at Roxbury and have loved playing ever since! I hope you enjoy it as well. Also, check out the mindfulness moment and sight-reading based on Dvorjak's symphony no. 9 as well as the additional videos of the cup game and one more song from South Africa!
Take a mindful moment by laying on the floor or sitting in a comfy spot and listening to this beautiful music. Take deep breaths and see if you can recognize the main melody.
Now it's your turn to learn and sing this beautiful melody!
I love this guy and his kids! They are making these great videos and I found this one which is another great South African song. Enjoy dancing!
Hola Mis Amigos!
We are going to explore music in Spanish this week! Tres Pajaritos and San Serenin are both songs found in many places where people speak Spanish, such as Spain, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Vamos a la mar is from Guatamala and Los Machetes is from our neighbor to the south, Mexico.
I hope you enjoy these fun songs and dances this week! Disfruta bailando y cantando con estas canciones!
