RECYCLING
Take heart!
While it's easy to believe that our recycling system is broken beyond repair, SEAC members called up the facility that processes our recycling (called a materials recovery facility or MRF) -- Newman Paperboard in Philly -- to determine what they actually recycle. If we all do our part to sort our trash correctly, we can take a critical step toward a zero-waste future!
January 2023 Update
In response to student concerns that recycling and trash were being picked up by the same truck and ultimately being trashed, SEAC reached out to Leck Waste Services, Solebury's waste hauler.
Through Leck, we have learned the following about recycling at Solebury:
Leck has GPS, time-stamped, service confirmation on all of our trucks, along with 8 vehicle cameras, including video footage of every single service event (i.e. picking up trash or recycling).
Our waste is picked up on Tuesdays (recycling at 1:15 pm and trash at 9:45 am) and Fridays (recycling at 8:30 am and trash at 10 am).
According to Sean Thompson, VP of Sales at Leck, "it wouldn’t make sense to dump the recycling in with the trash. The recycling program is working great, and it costs too much to dump at the landfill. Recycling makes so much sense financially. "
On occasion, if the recycling driver sees contamination in one of the recycling containers, they may skip dumping that one can and will contact the office to have the trash truck dump it. However, that is rare.
What you can recycle
Cardboard - break down boxes to save on dumpster space and reduce the frequency of pick-ups
Aluminum (cans are okay, but aluminum foil is NOT)
Paper - your math test, loose leaf paper, paper airplanes, magazines, printer or sheets of paper, envelopes (even with window), mailers, newspapers, paperback books - NO plastic binding, but paper clips are OK
Cartons and boxes without poly coating (cereal, pasta, etc., but NOT juice, frozen food boxes)
Plastics #1-2 ONLY - RINSE AND REMOVE CAPS FIRST - include rigid plastic containers like

How to figure out your plastic number
Look at the bottom of the plastic item for the recycling symbol.
Note the number on the bottom
Only recycle #1 and 2 (so NOT the coffee lid, which is #5)

Plastic bags
Shredded paper
Styrofoam, #3-7 plastics
