Our district participates in Unity Day every October. Students and staff wear orange to symbolize a stand against bullying. Unity Day is a time for us to come together to promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. This year, some of our local businesses joined our cause by wearing orange, posting signs in their windows, and providing special orange treats for their visitors.
Our district participates in International SEL Day every March. Students and staff lift one another up with kind words, signs, services, and chalk messages. Students create their own Zones of Regulation charts, discuss the importance of SEL in their own lives, participate in a door decoration contest, and focus on the importance of relationship skills and social awareness.
Our students and staff participate in The Great Kindness Challenge every February. Students create digital Valentines, distribute Kindness Grams to faculty and staff, post uplifting messages throughout their school buildings, and come up with additional ways to spread kindness at school, home, and in the community. Teachers include lessons on empathy and tolerance and encourage students to perform random acts of kindness to brighten someone else's day.
Our students and staff celebrate World Kindness Day in November. Everyone wears shirts with messages of kindness and cardigans in honor of Mr. Rogers. They participate in read alouds and discussions, and complete activities to focus on spreading kindness throughout our campuses and community.
Start with Hello Week focuses on Social-Emotional Learning as well as the importance of connections and helping others. Throughout the week, students participated in Start with Hello BINGO to promote a culture of kindness and inclusion. The BINGO card had tasks that included writing a thank you to someone, checking in on someone you think is having a bad day, reaching out to a remote learner in your class, and giving a compliment to someone. We also did a word cloud to show what Inclusion means to the staff and students. The Choose Joy Cart was a fun way to spread joy and increase connection with students and staff.
