Meets an ELA Reading and Research Credit (not grade specific)
Students can take 2 Book Studies to meet ELA requirements or as many as they like as Elective Credist
In this student-centered course, learners select and explore books aligned with their individual interests, reading levels, and goals. The Book Study course emphasizes critical thinking, personal reflection, and effective communication. Students engage in meaningful discussions, complete written responses, and connect literary themes to real-world contexts. Guided by mentors and educators, learners develop habits of lifelong reading, improve comprehension skills, and build confidence in expressing their ideas.
Each semester, students are offered new reading options in both fiction (literary) and nonfiction (informational) genres.
Previous books have included the following:
Literary Choices: Project Hail Mary, The False Prince, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Book Thief
Informational Choices: Game Changers, Atomic Habits, I'll Push You, You, Happier: The 7 Neuroscience Secrets of Feeling Good Based on Your Brain Type
Students select a book, read the assigned chapters, participate in live discussions with a teacher and peers, and reflect on the reading through written and/or spoken responses.
