Criminal Justice Program Advisory Committee at San Marcos High School
The Criminal Justice program at San Marcos High School is supported by an active and engaged Advisory Committee, ensuring that students gain valuable insights into the law enforcement industry. This committee is well-represented by community and industry professionals and reflects the diversity of our school community.
Our Advisory Committee members—Al Owens, Retired Police Lieutenant from the Escondido Police Department; Dan Willis, Retired Police Captain from the La Mesa Police Department; and Shawn Wray, Retired Sheriff Lieutenant from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department—play a crucial role in connecting students with real-world law enforcement experience. Each of these esteemed professionals serves as a guest speaker in the classroom, providing firsthand knowledge about careers in policing, leadership in law enforcement, and the challenges and rewards of serving the community.
Additionally, all three Advisory Committee members actively participate in the annual Comprehensive Local Needs Assessment (CLNA) Perkins meeting alongside the program instructor. Their involvement helps shape the program’s direction, ensuring that curriculum and career pathways align with industry standards and workforce needs. While the program does not currently hold monthly advisory panel meetings, the collaboration and expertise shared through these guest speaking engagements and the yearly CLNA meeting provide invaluable guidance for both students and educators.
Through this strong partnership between education and industry, the Criminal Justice program at San Marcos High continues to prepare students for future careers in public service and law enforcement.
