This individualized agreement works best for students who balance SHINE with summer school or a part-time job.
Students must participate in our All Cohort Friday sessions where all SHINE students interact, complete training, informative sessions and fun!
*SHINE students and USC undergraduates usually get together for an evening of games, a talent show, or other forms of getting to know one another.
*All staff, from Director to the undergraduate student employees, provide extensive office hours for students.

Start talking to your teachers in Nov 2023 to February, 2024, about your interest in SHINE and research. Let your recommenders know they will receive an email from the USC Viterbi SHINE program once you submit your application, so please plan ahead; their recommendation letters must be received before we can review, and send your application to the professor(s). Please verify your recommenders received our letter of recommendation request.
Before you begin the online application, be sure to have the names, title, and email addresses of your recommenders.
Application Deadline before or by February 16, 2024

CLASSES
The USC School of Cinematics Summer Program offers classes in many different aspects of filmmaking, such as:
Filmmakers Collective Summer 2025 (June 30-August 1)
The International Film Institute of New York (IFI) will offer a unique opportunity to learn the art of filmmaking in an in-depth, supportive, and intimate program.
The focus of this five-week in-person intensive is on storytelling and developing the skill sets necessary to translate the written page onto the screen. This is the backbone of the program, in which every student will have the opportunity to produce and direct their own four- to six-minute finished project. Along the way, technical aspects necessary to produce a final film—everything from discussions on operating cameras, to setting up lights, to capturing sound will be covered. Enjoy small sized classrooms with instructors that will give you the attention needed to excel.
The program will focus on storytelling and developing the skill sets necessary to translate the written page onto the screen. This is the backbone of our program, in which every student produces and directs their own 4-6 minute finished project by the end of the course. Along the way, we will cover the technical aspects necessary to produce a final film - everything from operating cameras, to setting up lights and capturing sound.
This program is designed to immerse the student from screenplay through post-production in an intensive course of study. Prepare to work evenings and weekends as necessary. This program is open to adults and high school students.
THE CURRICULUM
Students will participate in the following classes. Each class will have a different instructor.
The following is a breakdown of the courses and how we plan on conducting each session.
Screenwriting Class
Directing Class
Working With Actors
Camera Tech Overview
Lighting Workshop
Editing Workshop
Producing Workshop
Every class is designed to build on the information from a previous session. That is to say, each day and session is designed to build on the information you’ve already gained and get you to the next level. For instance, screenplays developed in the Screenwriting session are analyzed in the Directing Sessions. Once students have an understanding on how to break down scenes on the written page and compose it into shots, they will then go into Camera and Lighting to learn how to use the tools that will bring their projects to life. This will then be followed by a Working with Actors session, and a Producing overview seminar. Because of the way the curriculum is structured, attendance and participation are essential to the success of your project.

The Summer Science Program (SSP) is a nonprofit offering an immersion experience in experimental science to rising high school seniors. Working in teams of three on a college campus, participants complete a hands-on research project. The design incorporates values of collaboration and connection, rigor and challenge, trust and respect, inclusivity and support – exactly what high-potential teens need at this critical life stage, just before they apply to college. The experience accelerates their social and intellectual development, inspiring them to higher confidence and bigger dreams.
Each program includes twelve research teams of three participants each, led by seven dedicated, full-time faculty members. Each team is assigned a target of study, acquires and analyzes data, draws conclusions, and writes a final report. Working together continuously for 39 days, they bond as a living-and-learning community.
